Published Date: November 19, 2017

One hundred twenty-five years to the day after Jack the Ripper committed his first gruesome murder, a young woman is killed in a picturesque Spanish town. As if the eerie timing isn’t enough to unnerve Commissioner Carrillo, the murderer has mimicked the Ripper’s grisly method almost exactly.

Soon more women are murdered and their bodies horrifically mutilated. Tips and accusations fly wildly, sending the commissioner and his fellow officers chasing after suspects who might be innocent. Adding to the confusion, the killer is creating his own trail, carving mysterious signs on the bodies of his victims and texting the commissioner puzzling messages.

When the murderer reveals who his fifth victim will be, Commissioner Carrillo’s blood runs cold—he now has a personal stake in solving the atrocious mystery. Who is this villainous fiend posing as Jack the Ripper? Can he be caught before he commits his final murder?

About the Author

Ronald M. James was born during the great depression, and as a toddler watched WPA men build a new street, from his home’s big front window. His playmates were a red rider wagon, a small black satchel and rocks. By using his imagination he had conversations with mythical street workers that bloomed into fashioned fantasies by age four. NeuroDancer
Liquid Cool Book 3

The Cyberpunk Detective Series Continues to Thrill in NeuroDancer!

Liquid Cool is the action-packed (and funny), debut cyberpunk detective series.

Has Cruz met his supervillain match in NeuroDancer?

Liquid Cool is a Blade Runner meets the Maltese Falcon. In the next installment of the sci-fi/cyberpunk detective series, author Austin Dragon goes from less frenetic cyberpunk to a smoother, cyber-noir with our hero, Cruz, matching wits with the sultry NeuroDancer. There is always plenty of gritty action, suspense, thrills, and even a few laughs.

It’s the cyberpunk novel reimagined—an ever-rainy world of colossal skyscrapers, hover-cars, flashy neon streets, and futuristic mechanization. Metropolis isn’t a bad place, but it isn’t a good one either. Uber-governments and mega-corporations fight for control of the fifty-million-plus super-city, but so does crime.

“Don’t hate me because I’m beautiful,” she said to him. He should have listened to his instincts when she strolled into his office to hire him. “I knew I wasn’t gonna touch this case with a 10-foot pole. It had danger written all over it, back and front.” But he did take the Case of the NeuroDancer. Is this the private eye story where the bad “guy” rides off into the sunset and the hero lies flat on his back waiting for the meat wagon to fly down in their hoverambulance.

Which is crazier, indeed: the criminal—or the client? Welcome to the high-tech, low-life world of Liquid Cool.

The Electric Sheep Massacre
Liquid Cool Book 4

The Cyberpunk Detective Series Goes to London!

But in The Electric Sheep Massacre does our detective come back? And, is that before or after someone tries to kill him in the world of virtual reality?!

Liquid Cool is the action-packed (and funny), debut cyberpunk detective series.

Liquid Cool is Blade Runner meets the Maltese Falcon. In the next installment of the sci-fi/cyberpunk detective series, author Austin Dragon takes our private detective from the wild, concrete wastelands outside the supercity Metropolis across the Great Ocean to London Prime (that’s what they call it in the future) to the most dangerous place in the world—virtual reality, where all of a sudden people are killing and dying.

It’s the cyberpunk novel reimagined—an ever-rainy world of colossal skyscrapers, hovercars, flashy neon streets, and futuristic mechanization. Metropolis isn’t a bad place, but it isn’t a good one either. Uber-governments and megacorporations fight for control of the fifty-million-plus supercity, but so does crime.

Welcome to the high-tech, low-life world of Liquid Cool.

About the Book

Title: Accidental Lawyer

Author: Kim Hamilton

Genre: Mystery & Detective

ACCIDENTAL LAWYER is a contemporary fiction with a thread of mystery, and a humorous peek into the dubious practice of personal injury law.

Rookie attorney Jessica Snow is fresh out of law school and fresh out of options. She takes a job as an ambulance chaser—not because it’s her dream, but because she’s desperate to move out of her parent’s home. Her face and name appear on buses and billboards across the city, and if that isn’t enough to embarrass her mother, there’s a television commercial in the works. But Jess is determined to flex her legal skills and prove to her peers that she’s got what it takes.

With some help from her bold and brassy sidekick, Kari, Jess develops a remarkable proclivity for this line of work. She clings to her ethics and integrity while wrangling with a local mob boss, duping a drug-dealer, and confronting phony clients. When her boss is wrongly accused of murder, she sets out to track down the real killer.

Along the way, Jess builds a new kind of family for herself, her own tribe, made up of friends, colleagues and clients, many of whom are sure to raise eyebrows at her mother’s dinner table.

Accidental Lawyer is inspired by the ten inglorious years Kim spent as an ambulance chaser in Baltimore City—an experience from which Kim has almost fully recovered.

In the deepest reaches of the basements he discovered Noel in the musical instruments room. Simon wasn’t the least bit musical but Ivy was, which meant he was deeply interested in anything along that line, and what in the world was Noel doing? He’d got the top of a grand piano open and the strings were hanging out all over the place.

“Greetings,” said Simon. “That’s quite a mess you’ve got there.”

Noel looked up with a confused expression on his face. “Oh, it’s you, Binkle. Say, come over here for a minute and hold this, will you?” He held up a string. Simon tromped over to the piano and peered inside.

“What are you doing? Did something happen?”

“Just hold this please,” said Noel. Simon grabbed the string and pulled tight.

“No, not like that,” said Noel. “Just keep it out of the way.”

“Oh,” said Simon. He felt like an idiot standing there holding a loose piano string. But he was too curious not to ask. “What are you doing?”

“I dropped something. I need to get it out.”

“What?” He peered deeper. There was a teensy tiny frog inside. “Oh, I see it. Wait, it’s alive!”

“That’s right, it’s alive, and it’s going to be a disaster if I don’t get it out. It belongs to Professor Pargeter and it’s very valuable. It’s also poisonous so don’t touch it.”

“Really?” said Simon, reaching for the animal. “How poisonous?”

“What did I just say?” said Noel slapping Simon’s hand.

“Oh, sorry,” said Simon. He withdrew the hand but stared intently at the little thing, which was obviously so frightened it was turning colors.

“Now look what you’ve done,” said Noel. “It’s brought the poison to the surface. Stand back or it will spit.”

When Amanda arrives at the dreaded school, she considers running away—until she and her new friends discover blood and weird pink substances in odd places. At first they’re not sure whether these oddities mean anything, but when Amanda’s father disappears and the cook is found dead with her head in a bag of sugar, they’re certain that crimes are taking place.

Why I gave Amanda Lester so many flaws

“Amanda Lester was so tired of hearing about the great Sherlock Holmes she could scream. Mr. La-di-da boring detective, whoop-de-doo. Night and day, day and night, he was all her parents talked about. ‘It’s time to get serious, Amanda. When I was your age, I had already memorized Sherlock Holmes’s complete memoirs.’ ‘Darling, that will never work. You must do it like Sherlock Holmes.’ ‘Did I tell you what Mergatroyd Thumbwhistle said about Sherlock Holmes?’ She loved her parents but they were so clueless.”

Amanda’s ongoing battle with her parents lies at the heart of Book 1 of the Amanda Lester, Detective series. They want her to become a detective like her father’s ancestor, Inspector Lestrade. She wants to be a filmmaker—passionately. So when they force the issue by sending her to a secret school for detectives, you can imagine that she’s just a teensy bit upset. How is she going to be able to achieve her dreams from some dusty old manor house in the English Lake District?

As you probably know by now, she does come around to embrace her destiny, although not without resistance. What changes Amanda is love—love for her new friends and for the father who is suddenly placed in jeopardy. It is these people and the situations they face together that transform her from a self-involved one-man band to something deeper and more mature: a rounded, caring human being. By the end of the book she is reborn—still a filmmaker at heart because that’s who she is, but now a detective as well—one who uses her filmmaking skills to solve crimes.  Thus is the Amanda Lester, Detective series launched.

Amanda is a deeply flawed character. I made her that way because I like seeing what imperfect characters will do in sticky situations. How do they recover from their mistakes? What do they do when people attack them? What happens when they’re betrayed . . . or they betray someone, as much as they may not want to? Amanda goes off in the wrong direction more times than I can count. That’s because I find a detective’s mistakes so much more human than the straight line the usual literary sleuth draws from crime to solution. Amanda messes up in her personal relationships too for the same reason. And boy, does she embarrass herself. But don’t worry: it’s okay to laugh at her. You’re supposed to.

If you like surprises I think you will enjoy Amanda’s story. As you read you will discover that very little is as it appears, sometimes because the truth is purposely hidden, sometimes because things and people change from the way they’re first presented. It’s all because a detective’s world is full of secrets and twists. But you will find joy here as well, and thank goodness, because it takes more than principle to keep fighting crime.

In tomorrow’s post I will talk about the upside-down fantasy technology of Amanda’s world.

#Book #Blitz…Illegal Alien…#BookBoost

illegalalien_cvr-med

Book Description

Toledo police detective Audrey Vorkink has a reputation for getting things done. She might look like a middle-aged soccer mom (complete with bobbed hair), but she works hard and unwinds even harder. One night, as she’s meeting with her edgier-than-it-sounds knitting group, a hit-and-run accident turns deadly right outside the building. But something’s fishy about the missing driver, something positively…inhuman.

Audrey can run down any criminal, but what if this one’s from another planet? Can she bring this bad guy to justice? Is she losing her mind? Will she ever manage to get a decent haircut?

Find out in this snarky police thriller meets extraterrestrials (maybe) by Carrie Harris, author of BAD TASTE IN BOYS and DEMON DERBY.

Book Excerpt:

“Get your hands off me, soccer mom!” Demetrious White yelled as I closed the handcuffs over his wrists.

My partner, Detective Ronda Ross, let out a snort of amusement without moving from her spot flanking my left shoulder. Her gun remained steady, trained on the grimy floor of the porch just shy of the perp’s feet. I muffled a snicker. Out of all the insults I’d heard in my almost twenty years on the force, “soccer mom” was my favorite so far.

“You have the right to remain silent,” I said, my voice wavering only slightly with restrained laughter.

I ran through the rest of Miranda at top speed. It wasn’t like White hadn’t heard it before, and he wasn’t listening anyway. He was too busy trying to get a rise out of me while I droned on about his rights.

“Man, you got nothin’. Why you gotta do me wrong, soccer mom?” he said. When he got no reaction from that, he took a different tack. “I bet you’re a killer in the sack. Maybe you and I could take a little time in the backseat of the squad car. I got an anaconda I’d like you to meet. Give you a little sump’n-sump’n, you get me?”

I got him all right, but this wasn’t anything I hadn’t heard before. By this time, I’d finished with the pleasantries and started moving him toward our police issue sedan. I hated that car—it looked like it should belong to a washed up G-man—but I was looking forward to stashing White in the backseat so I could relax. The walk of shame to the car was always a tense moment. Ronda was a fairly solid woman, and I wasn’t exactly a waif, but most of the lowlifes we arrested had us on size. White was no exception. If he was going to make a break for it, this was the time.

As if on cue, he lurched forward, trying to pull his arms out of my grip.

“Let me go, bitch!” he shouted. “Fucking lesbian cop. Suck my dick!”

Strong-arming him wasn’t going to work when he had about a hundred pounds on me, so I didn’t try to wrestle him back into line. Instead, I gave the chain between his wrists a sharp yank as he pulled away. End result: he nearly yanked his own shoulders out of the sockets. Skinned his wrists something fierce on the sharp metal too. He let out a yelp of pain as all the fight went out of him. I shoved him the last few steps to the car while he yowled about police brutality. It was a relief to close the door behind him, although that only made him shout louder.

“Well, that escalated quickly,” observed Ronda, relaxing from her ready stance. “Soccer mom.”

“Don’t you start too,” I warned. “I’ll put you down.”

She rolled her eyes. “You couldn’t take me if you invited the entire nursing home as backup.”

“So first I’m a soccer mom, and now I’m the leader of a geriatric street gang?”

“What can I say? You’re a woman of many talents, Audrey.”

“Now you’re laying it on thiiiick.”

We paused for a moment to grin at each other. It wasn’t so much about the banter—that was fun and all—but more about the fact that we felt good about this case. We’d built it up together, brick-by-brick. We had physical evidence up the ying yang, all fully documented and quintuple-checked. We had the murder weapon, fingerprints, and DNA results. We had witnesses with statements that almost agreed for once. No case was ever open and shut, but if Demetrious White didn’t go down for the murder of Ronald Montrose, I was going to eat my shoes. It felt good. Almost good enough to distract me from the cracks about my appearance. I’d just gotten my hair cut, and so far, reactions hadn’t been what I’d hoped for.

As we got into the car, I said, “And by the way, this is not soccer mom hair at all.”

About the Book:

He devoted his life to seeking justice. But would she get any for him?

It was an ordinary day for police officer Barry Weir. It was the end of shift, he was tired, and he just wanted to get home to his wife and kids. But someone had other plans for him, shooting him down and forcing him to make the ultimate sacrifice.

When news of Weir’s murder reaches the department, it leaves Detective Madison Knight and every cop in the Stiles PD itching for revenge. It cuts Madison’s boyfriend, colleague, and Weir’s childhood friend, Troy Matthews, deepest of all, driving him away from everyone he loves just when they need one another the most.

With evidence pointing to a gang-related drive-by, Madison and her team investigate the town’s seedy underbelly in search of justice for their fallen brother. But the deeper they dig, the more convoluted the case becomes. Now they need to figure out if this was a random shooting as part of a gang initiation, a straight-up hate crime, or a targeted kill. But with members of the Stiles PD under attack, they have to do it fast…before more officers pay with their lives.

Troy was pacing the halls of the station, wandering one direction, then backtracking. If someone saw him, they’d think he’d lost his mind. And in a way, he had. It was then that he heard footsteps coming toward him. He found himself hoping it wasn’t Madison.

He took a few deep breaths, prepping himself to face a barrage of questions. And if he heard How are you doing? one more time, he might really lose his temper.

Barry had been dead for only a few hours. How exactly could anyone just shake that off?

“It got pretty heated in there.” His sister caught up to him and jacked a thumb over her shoulder toward the squad room, even though he was already around the corner and down another hallway.

“Don’t start.”

“Don’t start what exactly, Troy?” Andrea was resigning to her eldest sister voice, the one that rang through with an air of maturity and sense of being in charge.

“Anything, all right?” He turned his back on her and started to walk away.

“Have you even been over to see Joni and the girls yet?”

He stopped walking and took a deep breath. He didn’t bother to face her. “Don’t mother me, Andrea.”

“You can’t make this better. You can’t bring him back.”

Anger swelled in his chest and he was on the verge of tears, and he freaking hated it. This unraveling person he was becoming wasn’t who he really was. He was always put together. Reserved. In control. He took another breath and faced his sister. Her eyes were full of tears, and her facial features softened under his gaze.

Damn it! He didn’t need her pity. He’d be fine…on his own.

“Maybe you should sit this investigation out,” she said.

“Is that your sisterly advice?”

She lifted her chin, and her gaze flicked away.

“Andrea, don’t do this.” A heaviness sat on his chest, squeezing his heart and lungs as if they were in a vise.

“As the police chief, I have to look at the larger picture. Your emotional state isn’t the most conducive—”

“Fu—” He pointed a finger in her face and dropped it. “You know what? Do whatever the hell you have to. But you know that I’m the best person to have on this case. I won’t stop until Barry’s killer is behind bars.”

Silence stretched out between them. She was scanning his eyes, trying to read them.

“I’m probably making a big mistake here,” she started, pausing only to give him further scrutiny.

He wasn’t going to say another word. Why give her fodder? He was at her mercy. All he knew was if he tried to justify his abilities any more he’d officially be off the case. Still, it was hard to resist saying anything. He was about to say her name, ignore his gut telling him to keep quiet and plead his case, when she spoke.

“I’ll let you stay on the case.” Her gaze was laser-focused on him. “But you have to promise me something.”

He felt like his lungs could expand again. “Anything.”

“If you find it’s too much—” she put her hand up to stave off his defensiveness “—you promise to remove yourself from the investigation.”

He shook his head. “That’s not going to happen.”

Her eyebrows shot downward.

“As in, I’ve got this. And I pro—”

Another officer walked past them. Once he was out of earshot, Andrea put a hand on Troy’s shoulder and said, “Okay, but get over to see Joni.”

His heart sank in his chest. What was he supposed to say to Joni? Pile on more condolences, bury her so deep that she choked on the inevitable truth that her husband was gone?

“I’m sure she’d love to see you. Okay?”

Andrea was trying to make him accountable, but he had so much to do, didn’t he? He should at least get started with his men on gathering intel on the Hellions and pulling prior criminal history.

“Troy?”

His thoughts had gotten so carried away with the job, he’d almost forgotten her question. He met her eyes. “You’ve given me a second chance, and I’m not going to blow it.”

She tilted her head. “So when are you going to go over to see her?”

“There’s a lot to do.” Troy made a show of looking at his watch. “And time’s moving quickly. I’m of better use to Joni here—finding her husband’s killer.”

I’m not ready to be strong for her yet…

“All right, fine.” She sighed.

Fine was never fine for a woman, but he was just going to pretend it was and run with it. He waved to her as he headed for his desk.
