I flew out the door into the cool night, took four steps, then stopped—the latest enlightening news about my father had sent me over the edge. Tears burst from my eyes. The last shred of hope I’d been hanging onto that Henry wasn’t all bad had been completely obliterated; he was an actual monster.

I dropped to the curb and put my head in my hands. The rain started falling, lightly dusting my shoulders at first, then becoming a downpour just to add to my misery. I became soaked head to toe, but I didn’t care. I stayed where I was, wishing the rain would melt me into a puddle that would drain into the gutter and then just disappear into the earth…

“You left something in my truck,” said a voice from out of nowhere.

At the edge of my vision was Ben, rain coming down even harder now and pouring off his cowboy hat in rivers. He was holding out a paper bag, which was now soaked. It was the muffin I hadn’t eaten.

“I didn’t want it to go to waste,” he added, eyeing me with concern, then glancing at the café window where I could feel many sets of eyes on my back.

I dropped my gaze back to the gutter. My body didn’t want to move, and I still held out hope that the rain might just wash me away. Ben said something, and then he hauled me up and turned me to face him. He lifted my chin, and I had no choice but to meet his eyes. The rain plastered my hair to my face, mixing with the tears that were spilling out of me with blinding force.

He gave me a weak smile. “I tried to leave. Got in my truck and was ten minutes out of town, but then I realized…” He paused, fumbling for the right words. “I could really use some help at my ranch. Now, the job doesn’t pay much, but you’ll have your own room and all the food you can eat.
You’ll be dry.”

He waited patiently for an answer, but I was so grateful that all my words caught in my throat. He tossed the paper bag with the muffin into the garbage. After a quick glance at the internet café and the white-haired waiter watching from the doorway, his hand firmly latched onto mine. I had the sense I wasn’t being given a choice, I was going wherever this cowboy wanted me to.

“I’m taking you home now,” he said over the downpour.

Home. Home was in Luke’s arms….

The rain was falling in sheets. Since I wasn’t about to turn into a puddle and dissolve, I let the cowboy lead the way.

We See No Evil
The Cornelius Saga Book 4

Clyde was now standing a little more than a foot away from him and wondered why the boy didn’t look quite like… the boy.

Another exciting adventure in this best-selling series! EACH BOOK CAN STAND ALONE.

The Contract
The Cornelius Saga Book 5

Three times, Daniel Smith tried to commit suicide, but failed miserably. Will his survival point to something truly sinister? Would he have been better off dead?

Many “well-to-do” people have had depressing thoughts and suicidal tendencies — not knowing who to turn to or confide in. They believe an outward show of success will solve their problems and subdue their inner demons, but “achieving it all” and “having it all” fail to erase that nagging emotional pain. Daniel J. Smith tried a few times to end his life, but failed, and finally he thought: “Maybe there’s a reason I’m still here”. Read his troubling story in ‘THE CONTRACT: Murder in The Bahamas’, book 5 of the Cornelius Saga Series.

* * * *

Mira Cullen is prompted to fly out to The Bahamas to meet a man her brother Wade must introduce her to. Daniel Smith believes it’s providence that a chance encounter with Wade has resulted in him meeting the one person who could possibly bring to light and put to rest an age-old mystery involving his beloved mother. Smith, a product of “the contract”, which took place decades earlier — deems it an opportunity that literally sustained the lives of many, but in whose clutches also stole the life of the one person he loved more than anything else in the world.

Will Mira’s attempt to uncover the truth ultimately grieve the one who yearns for it? Or will the final discovery prove to be bitter-sweet?

The Lost Children of Atlantis
The Cornelius Saga Book 6

Could these be the ramblings of a nutcase or could this seemingly far-fetched story about “lost children” actually be true?

Mira Cullen, an attractive young doctor and psychic, meets old, sick, occasionally delusional Stefanie Brussels. Stefanie claims to know otherwise unheard-of facts as related to the shocking catastrophe of long ago where so many had perished, but no one in their right mind believes her. She also mentions an artifact in her possession that was dug up over a decade earlier that holds “special powers”. Will Mira take anything she says seriously and if she doesn’t, what is bound to be the outcome?

An alluring tale and for some, an unfathomable mystery.

I HATED THE CURIOUS AND often skeptical looks, which came from the audience in the gallery. I gently eased my body into the chair and faced them directly. It felt more like I was a participating target in a firing squad than a courtroom proceeding.Shifting from side to side in the cushioned seat, I fidgeted with my tie.

It was the only thing I could do under the circumstances.I waited patiently trying not to nervously tap my fingers.At least the chair was comfortable as I rested my forearms and hands on the armrest. It was not easy to avoid looking at the two burly sheriff deputy bailiffs stationed at the back corners of the room. They watched everyone with an extreme somber, statue-like presence. I was not even sure if they actually blinked or not.

All eyes in the courtroom fixated on me.The room fell into complete silence. The audience readied themselves waiting for the show to begin. At least that was what I had imagined in my own mind.  I realized when the prosecutor had finally called my name to testify and the bailiff escorted me into the courtroom that I had forgotten to change my shoes. Dirt and mud had affixed deep into the crevices of the heavy-duty rubber soles, which donated little chunks of dried soil as I walked from the back of the courtroom to the witness area.

There were little piles of mountain soil left behind with every stride. It looked like I had stolen shoes from a homeless person.It was only yesterday that I had taken an extra-long walk down a wooded path that was barely passable even for the native wildlife, but I did not let the rugged terrain scare me out of adding another specimen to my collection of California sediment. In the process, my shoes sunk deep into the mud. At one point my foot had slipped from the left shoe and then plunged my sock-clad foot directly into the sticky muck.

    I was all too aware of how disheveled I looked only two months before my fortieth birthday. It was not appealing. My appearance did not give the impression that I was an expert at anything, but somehow I managed to muddle through with an air of authority.Crime scenes never lied, and it was my job to explain the scientific facts to the non-scientific community; but in the end, it was up to the jury to make the right choice of guilt or innocence. Twelve good people ultimately shouldered the justice burden, and I was just the messenger of facts—good or bad.

Top Ten List:

Ten of my favorite things

Why do I love Paris? It has or does at least ten of my favorite things. I have “lived” as a transient in Paris a few times. That means I stay 2 to 6 months. It is:

A vibrant city where la joie de vivre is often evident in so many ways and nearly every day; so, it is

a shot in the arm, and an escape into a different kind of reality;

A communion with history we can still relate with, a history boasting some of the greatest thinkers and great architecture spared from bombs that leveled other European cities;

A veritable tableau where a gathering of people in a park reminds you of a Manet or Monet painting;

An ode to light and colors celebrated in artistic revolutions that gave birth to gothic churches and modern art, starting with Impressionism;

A lover of art and culture with world-class exhibits in its world-class museums as well as days or nights dedicated to celebrating the arts;

Rich with world-class parks with beds and large vases of flowers massed in harmonious colors. They invite you to linger on benches and plentiful green metal chairs under sprawling shady trees;

Where you needn’t go beyond your block (or two) to find a boulangerie where you can get a warm crusty baguette in late afternoon, great macarons or tasty tarts—fresh, everyday. And cheap, compared to pastries you buy in fancy bakeries in the US;

In a country where cultivating food and wine and preparing them for consumption is considered part of the patrimoine—the French national heritage, and

where mayonnaise and many other dishes and sauces that help make eating a pleasure were “invented”.

It was business as usual. It was not until another co-worker pointed out a strange occurrence since the new management took over – people had started to go missing. Jeff chalked it up to people unhappy with the change and quitting, but when his friend is the next to ‘up and quit’, never heard from again, Jeff starts to believe there is more going on than mere disgruntled employees.

Demanding to know what happened to his friend, Jeff tries to meet with the new leadership, only to get a chilly reception. He is denied repeatedly for a request to meet with his HR rep. Why can’t he talk to management? Why are they so distant? Just what is happening behind the door of Room 423?

Sneaking Out
Chuck Vance
(Chased, #1)
Published by: Dunemere Books
Publication date: March 6, 2018
Genres: Mystery, Young Adult

Could you sleep next to a murderer?

Luke Chase—yes, that Luke Chase, a modern hero ripped from the headlines—didn’t mean to get caught up in Mrs. Heckler’s murder. He just wanted to hook up with the hot new British girl at St. Benedict’s, and if that meant sneaking out to the woods after hours, then so be it. But little did he know someone would end up dead right next to their rendezvous spot, and his best friend and roommate Oscar Weymouth would go down for it. With suspects aplenty and a past that’s anything but innocent, Luke Chase reluctantly calls on his famous survival skills to find the true killer.

For fans of “A Study in Charlotte” and boarding school lit, “Sneaking Out” (book one in the “Chased” series) immerses readers in the privileged prep school world, with a mystery that exposes the dark side of life on a residential high school campus.

Goodreads / Amazon / Barnes & Noble

Luke stood up and held out a hand to help Pippa up. He didn’t let go after she rose, and he clasped it firmly as they walked together. It didn’t feel awkward—he’d already held her hand a couple of times. He felt protective. They walked along in silence.

They passed a mailbox, its hinge squeaking in the wind. The wind had picked up a plastic bag, which was scraping along the road, dancing with the fallen leaves. Every noise was amplified.

Luke pulled Pippa toward him to avoid a ditch. It was then that Luke sensed something. He glanced over his shoulder, and saw the flash of someone jump behind a tree. Luke’s muscles tensed. They were being followed.

“Don’t turn around, but someone is behind us,” warned Luke. “On foot.”

He saw Pippa’s neck stiffen. “Who is it?” she whispered.

“Not sure, but let’s speed up.”

They started walking as fast as possible without running. Luke felt as if there was a bullseye on his back. Was the person who was following them crazy enough to do something to harm them? What if he had a gun?

They were about a block away from the nearest streetlight. Luke feared that if they walked under it, they would be completely exposed to whoever was following them. It seemed safer to remain in the shadows. He abruptly pulled Pippa diagonally across the street. They picked up their pace and stayed on course.

“We’ll be able to see who it is when they pass the streetlight,” said Luke.

“Do you think he crossed, too?”

Luke pricked his ears. He could hear a distant tap, tap. Footsteps. “No, he’s on the other side.”

They walked past the streetlight and up about thirty feet before stopping short and turning around. For a split second, they saw a figure bathed in the light, but then it darted to the side. It looked like a man, in a baseball hat. But he was too fast for them. Luke grabbed Pippa’s hand tightly.”

“We need to run.”

Jesse Fairlane is missing. Max Larkin and Special Agent Michaels are unsure if this is related to a recent case involving human trafficking or something else. On top of trying to locate his partner, Max has to make a decision as to whether he leaves Rockton to work with the FBI or stays to become captain at the local police department. As Larkin, Michaels, and the other detectives work furiously to find Jesse before it’s too late, Max finds himself despairing they’ll find her alive. He struggles to maintain his relationship with Veronica and trying to be a friend to Jesse’s girlfriend, Melissa, all while following a maze of clues to Jesse.

The convention had been long and tiring, and Fiona stifled a yawn. Then she caught the eye of the man in the elevator, the man whom she’d met just hours before, and giggled.

“Long day, eh?” he said.
Jesse Fairlane is missing. Max Larkin and Special Agent Michaels are unsure if this is related to a recent case involving human trafficking or something else. He struggles to maintain his relationship with Veronica and trying to be a friend to Jesse’s girlfriend, Melissa, all while following a maze of clues to Jesse..
She stared around, taking in the artwork on the walls, the deep pile of the carpet under her feet, and the shining wood of the doors in the corridor, as the man held his key card against the lock, buzzing them into his suite. The interior astounded her. He’d laughed when she had stoutly declared that she wouldn’t go to his hotel room, and now she could see why. This was an entire apartment with no bed in sight to remind her of the things she refused to do on a first date. There were enormous plate-glass windows lording over stylish furniture. A big bowl of fruit sat on the counter of a well-equipped kitchen.
“Wow!” she said, unable to stop herself.
“Quite something, isn’t it?” he said. “Glad I’m expensing this rather than footing the bill.”
He was a sales rep, he’d told her. Must be pretty good at his job to merit a hotel like this.
“So, Fiona Turner,” he said, eyes flicking down to the name badge that was still pinned to her chest. “Let me get you a drink. I’d say we deserve one, wouldn’t you?”
She nodded and walked to the windows to look out over the glowing city below as he strode to the kitchen area. She heard the pop of a cork as she tried to locate landmarks below her. She felt the cool touch of glass against her hand, and turned to take it from him.
He stood next to her and they sipped while watching the city move toward slumber for the night. At times, she could feel his stare on her in the glass. Whenever she tried to catch him, he would take another sip to hide his eyes.
She wasn’t sure when she knew that something was wrong. At first it was nothing, a little blurring around the edges of her vision, a slight dizziness when she went to sit down. Perhaps the wine was hitting her harder than she’d imagined. She shouldn’t have skipped lunch to attend that talk. On the other hand, she thought, perhaps she was just dehydrated. She took the last sip of crisp pinot grigio in the stemmed glass. It was the last thing she remembered.

At Vista Apartment Complex, life drastically changes for four of its residents when they decide to do business with Crazy Jade—the supposed voodoo witch that can grant your wish for a price.

Shemeya wants the confidence to stand up against the girls bullying her at school, but she soon has to choose between keeping her dreadlocks or living a normal life. After catching her boyfriend cheating, Latreece just wants to have the same curves as all the other girls. Ashley will do whatever she can to have “White Girl Flow”, but takes her pursuit too far when she steals from Crazy Jade.

Everyone who comes into contact with Crazy Jade soon learns the true price of her magic—and how horribly wrong it can go.

If you were able to tell someone your personal deepest secrets, without strings attached, would you?  If something is too good to be true, is it?  If you heard rumors in your neighborhood about a strange tenant living among you, would you befriend that person?  Those questions were on the minds of three tenants living at the Vista Apartment Complex.  Each of them seemingly with his or her own set of circumstances, trying to make a way in this life.

Jade, better known as Crazy Jade, was known to the Vista Apartments as a voodoo queen.  There were all sorts of rumors flying around the neighborhood about what Crazy Jade could do to you, if prompted.  Thing is, Shemeya was warned to stay away from Jade, but she babysat her son, Coal, and didn’t think she was that bad of a person to deal with.  After all, rumor and speculation were just that, so what did that have to do with her?  Jade paid her good money to watch after Coal, so people could say what they wanted.  Jade had a way of knowing things about a person.  Call it woman’s intuition or just plain luck, she knew Shemeya enough to know she wasn’t her usual bubbly self.  Turns out Shemeya was being bullied by some mean girls in school.  Shemeya mentioned to Jade the teens teased her and called her names.  One name in particular, “Medusa” because of her dreadlocks.

Latreece was your typical smart eleck teenager going through the motions of school and one in particular was her body image.  As a black girl, she knew black boys enjoyed girls with big breasts and a large bodacious ass—none of which Latreece possessed.  She wanted to gain more weight and thicken up.  With her bean pole stature, that wasn’t going to attract any of the boys she desired.  Her grandmother tried to tell her she was beautiful as she was, but that wasn’t enough for Latreece.  So, Latreece confides in Jade about wanting to have a curvy body.

Ashley was a young woman handling business, but one thing she couldn’t handle was her hair.  Apparently, Ashley didn’t know she’s not her hair, but you couldn’t tell her that.  Even though she was half white and half black, she didn’t luck up and have the type of hair that flowed like the Caucasian DNA that flowed through her blood.  Unfortunately, Ashley fell more on her African-American roots.  Her hair was nappy as people in the black community called it.  She wanted her hair to flow like white girls.  Hmm, someone in the hood told her that Jade could hook her hair up, in which she did, but when Jade wasn’t looking, Ashley came across a book written in a language that Ashley wasn’t familiar with, but she could make out a recipe for the stuff that Jade put in her hair to make it silky, smooth and flowing.  Hell, Jade wasn’t going to need this book.  Ashley stole it, and that, readers is where our story gets rather interesting.

Each of these individuals had their own share of problems, and Jade was the common denominator that bound them all.  Shemeya’s dreadlocks turn into snakes; Latreece eats a special root and her body is banging; and Ashley has beautiful hair, but she looks like a vampire has been sucking the blood from her body.  Was this all in their minds?  Were they imagining these things?  Other strange occurrences begin to happen to other victims at Vista Apartments.  It seems Jade is at the center of all these happenings, or is she?  You’ll have to read to find out.

I have to say, I was shocked by the content of this story.  I had this book on my shelf for so long, I didn’t really know what it was about and nor did I bother to read the synopsis to find out.  It’s Black History Month and I try to read as many books as I can by my people, and I loved the cover and decided to check it out.  Boy, was I pleasantly surprised.  This was a great story!  I truly enjoyed it and couldn’t wait to find out how much more strange things would happen.  The only drawback to the story would be it’s a cliffhanger and I absolutely hate that.  You have to read the rest of the series to find out what happens to some of the characters, but even though it cliffed me, I still loved the story.

Mello & June gives Black Beauty five fists pointing to the sky.  Wow, I’ve read so many indie authors these last few weeks and these books have been damn good.  I’m so impressed with the quality of writing I’m seeing from the indie author—this book included.  I couldn’t be prouder of the stories I’ve been reading.  If you like suspense, you’ll enjoy this story.  It’s very short, direct and to the point.  The characters and story line were very interesting.  I’m positive you’ll enjoy the story.  Until next time, Intellectual Minds, keep on reading!
