SNEAK PEEKS:

Claiming His Virgin by Grace Goodwin:

My marked mate, Helen from Earth, was everything I imagined but never expected to have. I knew from watching her that her laughter came easily and her eyes were a unique combination of green and gold I’d never seen before. I longed to have her look at me and know me. Know exactly who claimed her. Who mastered her body.

I longed to have those eyes focused on me not just in pleasure, but with love. Affection. Desire. But those were a fool’s dreams. Those thoughts did not belong to a scarred warrior like me.

Perhaps if I could seduce her, bring her enough pleasure, she would learn to tolerate my appearance. It was the best I could hope for, but that hope burned and twisted inside me like hot knives. Wanting her was painful, but it was an agony I refused to give up.

Dravven’s Submissive by Megan Michaels:

Sable’s shapely legs the length of them enhanced by the silky material of her leggings which hugged them tightly had Dravven’s hand aching to glide up their length, ending at the apex of her sex.

“Your penis is hard and clearly visible. Are you getting hard thinking about how awesome you are?” Sable’s mischievous grin had her eyes twinkling in a way that he found irritating and yet, fascinatingly beautiful.

“Princess, let me assure you, any fantasies I’m currently having involve your long legs wrapped around my hips with your naked body writhing under me while you scream in ecstasy.” Dravven shamelessly adjusted his hard-on, smirking back at his little minx.

Sable’s cheeks turned an adorable pink, and finally reaching the top of the stairs she roughly brushed by him, bumping his shoulder in the process before landing unceremoniously into a plush chair.

Firmly shutting the door and latch, Dravven stood with his hands on his hips looking at Sable, watching her squirm under his inspection.

“I’m not going to sleep with you—even if we are married.” Her lips thinned, and a tic became visible in her jaw as she clenched and unclenched her teeth.

Bending over, he held her chin between his fingers. “I don’t steal anything. You’ll voluntarily beg for my cock in your hot cunt, and it won’t take long. I’m patient and have no problem waiting, but if your scent is correct…and I’m sure it is…you’re dripping with need, Princess.”

“I don’t know what you’re talking about.” Sable yanked her chin out of his grip, tilting her head up in what he assumed would be her typical stubbornness.

It was okay. He’d wait. Sable would submit…in all things. Sooner rather than later.

The Revolution
Alicia Michaels
(The Bionics Novels, #3)
Published by: Crimson Tree Publishing
Publication date: January 18, 2018
Genres: Adult, Dystopian, Science Fiction

Blythe Sol has a New Year’s Resolution, but it’s not your typical self-improvement plan. She wants to end the conflict between the government and the Resistance once and for all—by sneaking into Washington D.C. and putting a bullet in President Drummond’s skull. If she can cut the head off the snake, the genocide of the Bionics might finally end. But if she fails, she will surely bring retaliation crushing down upon the entire Resistance.

Blythe and fellow soldier Dax Janner are already coping with the loss of people they loved. When their dormant feelings for each other begin to rekindle, they struggle with feeling anything positive after so much suffering. The return of Gage will only confuse matters more. As the terrorist sect known as The Rejects begins to work hand in hand with the government to push the Resistance toward all-out war, the battle will be brought to their doorstep. Will the movement stand tall and conquer—or collapse under the strain and be destroyed for good?

The Revolution is the thrilling third novel in the award-winning Bionics series by Alicia Michaels.

Swallowing the bile rising in the back of my throat, I close my human eye again and zoom in through the scope. I move the rifle until the crosshairs rest over Drummond’s forehead.

“I’m taking the shot.”

“Wait,” Dax says. “Maybe you shouldn’t.”

Disbelief drops my jaw, but I don’t take my eyes off the president. “What? Why the hell not?”

“Listen to me, B,” he says, his voice sounding closer. I feel him crouching beside me. “If we kill him now, they’ll just say we did it to silence him. Don’t you understand? If we kill him now, he’ll look like a martyr.”

My palms break out in a sweat, and Drummond’s voice fades to an unintelligible warble as my blood begins to rush so fast I can hear it roaring in my ears. Dax is right … but Drummond is in my sights. The man who destroyed our lives and killed my family. The man who murdered Yasmine and threatened to come for the rest of us.

“I have to,” I whisper, curling my finger around the trigger once more, shaking my head to clear it. “We came all this way.”

“Undetected,” Dax argues. “We can leave the same way. It’s not too late.”

“Yes, it is,” I argue. “It’s too late to go back! I won’t get another shot like this.”

“We’ll find another way,” he insists, his hand now on my shoulder. “A way that doesn’t make us look like the terrorists he’s making us out to be.”

I jerk away from his hold and refocus through the scope. “You can only treat someone like shit for so long before they snap. You can’t keep backing people into a corner without expecting them to eventually come out swinging. Drummond wants me to be a terrorist? Fine … I’ll earn my fucking spot on the FBI’s Most Wanted list. I’m taking the goddamn shot.”

Dax whispers a string of curses under his breath, but he doesn’t physically try to stop me. He doesn’t touch me again. I think it’s because, deep down, he wants to see this fucker pay for what he did to Yasmine. He wants to see Drummond fall, even though he knows the consequences we’ll face for it.

I zoom in a little closer … so close it feels like I’m staring directly into his cold, dead eyes. Spittle gathers in the corners of his mouth as he gets really riled up, waving his hands and pointing as he raises his voice to rally the crowd to his side. All around the world, people are buying into this … believing every poisonous word that comes from his mouth.

It’s time to silence him once and for all.

Taking another deep breath, I hold it as I prepare for my moment of truth. I see my father falling to the ground with a bullet in his skull … my mother sobbing hysterically as Skyye’s insides paint our front lawn red. And the hot rage in my veins goes cold like ice, freezing there as the entire world around me goes still.

As I exhale, my finger squeezes the trigger.

Caught up in a web of intrigue as he investigates the death of his master, Corvinus, and pursued by agents that want to erase all knowledge of Corvinus’ work, Zethus discovers that the key to his master’s murder lies in the last project he had pursued before his death. The roots of this project lie deep in the past, at the origin of CrossTown’s fractured reality.

Once he understands the stakes, Zethus must make the dangerous journey to the cradle of history. The price he must pay to find the answers he seeks will threaten everything he holds dear―including his own humanity.

Roads and streets run like veins and arteries through the beating heart of CrossTown.  Each runs through all manner of distant and not-so-distant possibilities.

There’s a theory in modern physics that posits a universe for every decision we make.  Each time we choose, right or left, high or low, vanilla or chocolate, we split into separate universes.  A vanilla me here, a chocolate me there, a rocky road with pistachio me somewhere else, and some poor lactose intolerant me further down the line.  The dominant me is my subjective reality.  In CrossTown, the probable mes collapse into the dominant wave, but all those wandering Ways continually wash other alternate lives, lives meant to be lived in CrossTown, up on its jagged shores.

The names of roads are choices; the turning and branching of roads are choices; roads are physical manifestations of their builders’ decisions…

Everywhere, every place and every time where man or something like him has lived, roads run into one another, branch, disappear here and reappear over there as if they were quantum tunneling.  They run, meet, part, cross again, and form a bewildering Mandelbrot set of linked probabilities.

Beware the road outside your front door, for it is both old friend and passing stranger.

All those choices, all hooked together, comprise a vast sea of possibility.  A knowledgeable traveler can ride the currents in that sea to unimagined destinations…

CrossTown is the crossroads of probability.

#BookTour…Soul Mirrors…#BookBoost #SciFi #Fantasy #Giveaway @lovingthebook

My love of storytelling tracesback to my step-mother, who spun wonderful fantasy stories when I was child. I finished my first novel at sixteen. That first attempt was terrible, but taught me quite a bit about story construction. Though I would start numerous other projects in the following years, I wouldn’t actually complete another book for another 21 years.

I wasn’t idle in that time, though. I earned a degree in engineering, married the love of my life, worked as a semi- truck driver crisscrossing the country, moved from Texas to North Dakota and then came back home.

It’s been a fun and interesting journey. I really enjoy engineering, but writing was my first passion, and I’m excited to share it with you.

I currently live in West Texas with my wife and our two adorable (but weird) cats.

“No one knows how human genetics evolved to create Mirrors. No one knows how the evidence of a criminal’s last horrendous act can be confirmed in a single gaze of a child’s silvered eyes. But just because science can’t explain something doesn’t mean it can’t be used, and this gift is simply too valuable to ignore.

Twins Thomas and Ashley Ross have grown up knowing they would be used as Mirrors for the “good” of humanity. When their powers mature at age twelve, they are taken weekly to fulfill their role. By reliving the most heinous crimes from a perpetrators’ perspective, they alone can assure that no innocent people will be executed, and that the worst offenders are not set free due to lack of evidence.

Justice is not without cost, however. Taking on the memories of others is a destructive process, one that quickly consumes the children involved until most take their own lives. As despair threatens to drown Thomas and Ashley, a distant hope keeps them from succumbing: If they can make it to their eighteenth birthday, their contract with the government will be fulfilled. Changing views on the morality of their role threatens to tear them apart, but the twins struggle to cling to each other and try to construct a fragile life above the weekly flood of horrors.

As their work takes it toll, however, a new question emerges: does survival even matter when you’re already broken beyond repair?”

“A whole lifetime in seconds,” he said in a whisper. Ashley didn’t respond. “I saw everything. Lived everything. I thought I was . . .” He broke off, then, grimacing, said, “It’s clearer now, but for a while it felt like I was him. It felt like he had wiped away everything inside me. I thought I was going to be him.”

Ashley finally moved. With a tired sob, she rolled over but didn’t bother sitting up. Those silver Mirror’s eyes watched him tearfully. She stared at him, meeting his shaded gaze for a long moment before finally nodding.

“You could Reflect me,” she said. “I could see myself. Know that I’m not him.”

Thomas exhaled sharply. “It would kill us.” That was one of the first things he remembered their parents explaining. He’d never even considered meeting Ashley’s eyes on purpose. The very thought sent a shudder down his spine.

“I . . . I know.” Ashley let out a sob. “I don’t want to die. I just . . . it’s not fair. I just want to know who I am, Thomas. I want to scrub away Spencer; I want to see me. I’ve seen him, Thomas, and I don’t want to become him.”

“You won’t.” The words were forceful, but Thomas felt hollow saying them.

Idle dreams were no more than fleeting hope, but he had dared to dream about this conversation. Riding home, he had constructed an impossible scene. Meeting Ashley, she would smile and hug him, welcoming him back. Then she’d proceed to tell him that her Reflected was innocent, that he was good and kind, and that his arrest was a mistake. She’d act like she had this morning: excited and happy to have played her part.

He usually liked ribbing Ashley for being stupidly optimistic, but he realized that today he’d fallen into the same trap. No one could endure what they had lived today and smile about it. For once, though, he wished she’d been right.

When fighting, I think about nothing but the moment. There’s no room for obsessing over the Assassins, being depressed over Brooks, or mad at Shea for wanting to leave. There’s only my opponent and me. Defeat or be defeated. I want to drag out the fight, use it as an escape. Some people revert to alcohol and drugs for escape, I use ass-kicking.

“I’ll take you down even with my gimp arm and without using pressure points,” I say.

Shawn’s smile spreads. “Ooohh, them’s fightin’ words. That’s a lot of talk for a buck-ten shorty.”

As I re-wrap my gloves, I gaze at Shawn with a wicked grin. “You forget who you’re talking to.” Shawn might have more muscle in his one bicep than I do in both of mine combined, but I can still beat him. It’s all about physics, about knowing how to use one’s weight to one’s own advantage. This is going to be fun.

I finish strapping on my gear and join Shawn in the ring. Paramore blares through the speakers and the recruits shout encouragement at us. We meet in the center and tap knuckles. Shawn gives me a wink. I laugh.

We dance around each other––backs rounded, chins down, guards up––waiting for the other to strike. Shawn is skilled and with his strength, he could knock me out with one good strike. He’s also much slower than I and tends to tire out faster. Even with working myself harder in warm-up, I have better stamina than him.

He throws a right jab. I easily dodge out of the way, light on my toes. Next he throws a combo: right jab, left hook and round house. I sidestep the jab, knock the hook away and duck under the roundhouse. I take advantage of him being on one leg and sweep his stationary leg out from under him. Shawn falls to his back with a thud, his eyes wide. I let him jump back to his feet. Although I could have, I’m not ready to end it.

Ten minutes later, Shawn’s breathing is labored. We’ve both gotten some hits in, but nothing either of us can’t recover from quickly. I see my next opening when he throws a hook followed with a spinning back kick. Not the smartest move when you’re already winded, so really, he deserves what’s coming.

As soon as Shawn’s back is to me I throw a hard kick to the back of his knee sending him to the floor in mid-kick. I jump on his back and initiate a rear naked choke hold. My arm is wrapped around his neck, under his chin, and secured into place with the other one so I don’t slip off from the sweat. My wound burns like hell, but I refuse to give up. I have him. I push his head into the crook of my arm and squeeze tighter. My arms look like a milky cobra against his dark skin.

“You better tap,” I say, out of breath. “I have no problem putting you to sleep, big guy.”

Shawn grunts, struggling to get free. I add more pressure until he finally taps. I release him and collapse on my back next to him.

“Good workout,” I say, and slap him on the shoulder. “I told you that you had no chance today.”

“Damn, girl,” Shawn says between breaths. “I feel sorry for whoever pissed you off. By the way, you’re bleeding through.”

I look at the bandage on my arm. A red blotch is staining the white cloth.

“Great, probably busted a stitch.”

“I’m trying not to gain any satisfaction from it.” He rubs his head. “If I have to lose, at least I know it’s hard on you.”

My music suddenly stops in the middle of a song. I lift my head to see Shea standing at the radio. Shea and I glare at each other for a moment. Ugh, why can’t she just follow the rules? Yeah it sucks sometimes. Brooks’s hurt eyes flash in my mind and pain explodes in my heart again. Really sucks. But that’s how it is in our world. Breaking the gaze, I get up and peel off my sparring gear.

Shawn whistles a long note, looking from Shea to me and back again. “Now that’s a fight I wouldn’t mind seein’. You all are pissed.” He chuckles. “Chick fights are hot. Can we throw in some mud? Or oil?” He nods his head. “Definitely oil.”

“Shut up, Shawn!” Shea says, rolling her eyes.

“I’m just sayin’. It would make you feel better if you hashed it out.” He spreads his hands and shrugs his large shoulders. “Well, at least it would make me feel better.”

“Shawn,” I warn.

“Can’t blame a brother for tryin’.”

As I grab a bottled water from the gym fridge, Shea and I continue to ignore one another. I head for the door, glancing down at my bleeding arm. After my shower, I’ll need to make a stop at the infirmary. I step out the door and almost run smack into Carol Breakenridge, head of the Europe DWD. She brushes off her jacket like I ruined it. Her blond hair is pulled away from her face, accentuating her angular features and large blue eyes.

I back away from her. “Sorry, ma’am.”

She crosses her arms across her chest. “Yes, you should be,” she says in a clipped tone heavy with a French accent.

“It was an accident,” I reply in a less friendly way. “I didn’t see you.” Head or not, between being ignored earlier and my all-around crappy day, I’m about out of patience.

“I was referring to that display in there,” she says raising her chin at the gym. “Why did you not finish him when you had the chance?” She apparently watched the fight and must have seen when I let Shawn get up. “You should never hold back your strengths. If you do, you may die.”

We were just training, working out. It’s not like we were in a real fight. Even though I’m annoyed with her overreaction, I nod and give her the respect I should. “I’m sorry, ma’am. I would have done better had I known you were watching.”

She drops her voice to a whisper, and raises a perfectly waxed brow, “Dear Jade, you are always being watched,” she smiles slyly. “Analyzed. Your actions may affect more than just you.” She turns and walks away, leaving me with an uneasy feeling. I’ll be more than glad when the Heads leave.

From Sorcerers’ Dynasty by Stephen Perkins copyright 2017 all rights reserved.

 Introduction:

September 2001, D.A.R.C. facility (Center for advanced research and development) deep beneath the arctic ice rim

The new age of darkness was about to fall. It was the epoch of nightmares, demons, and hateful spirits, hatched out from the foul womb of mankind’s subconscious.

And yet, there was nothing new except what had been forgotten. Since time immemorial, the world had always been merely a theater of illusion, albeit a very persistent one, ruled by a sorcerers’ dynasty.

A long shadow slowly crept from a dark corner of the laboratory and into the spangled light. From between the array of shiny consoles and computer monitors blinking gold, green, and blue, Dr. Nathaniel Martin proudly gazed upon his twin creations.

More than any of his inventions over the long centuries, of these he was most proud. Though patents for his most brilliant creations had been filed under the property of his benefactor, Serenity Corporation, the sensory thrill derived from the sheer act of creation, and the idealistic notion merely one of his inventions may benefit mankind, had sufficed and sustained him. For, what were material wealth, comfort, and fleeting fame, Martin pondered, next to the higher considerations of advancing the interests of his fellow man?

Among his other ground-breaking inventions, he pondered the significance of one of his other great discoveries, the secret to human immortality. Would that his desire to share it with the world at large came to bear, Martin thought, but for the iron hand of his benefactor, Serenity Corporation. Though Serenity represented his master, Martin contemplated, throughout the centuries, it had shown itself to be unprincipled, ungrateful, and selfish, believing in nothing save its own material enrichment.

In cool deliberation, he stroked the silvered strands of his well-trimmed beard. Stepping from out of the shadows, he arched his skeleton thin frame over the glass canopy. They were as much symbolic as material flesh, he thought, one black, the other white, representing mankind’s inherent duality. Now, his decades of painstaking research into the creation of sentient life had at last come to triumphant fruition. The doctor glanced at a young laboratory technician standing nearby, tapping figures onto the screen of a digital tablet.

“Congratulations Doctor,” the young colleague said. “Your advanced gene editing process created the first trans-human sentient beings. But now, you’ve successfully drawn the roadmap to mankind’s evolutionary future.”

A proud smile drew across the doctor’s countenance. Owl large brown eyes twinkled beneath gold rimmed spectacles. “I believe you are correct,” Martin replied in a profound whisper. “Indeed, both specimens represent the next evolutionary step for mankind. They shall be placed with carefully vetted and deserving families,” Martin said. “Public records will be made to look legitimate. It will appear as if they were adopted. They shall be attended only by authorized technicians posing as family physicians. They shall appear human, their lives playing out normally. No one, shall suspect anything amiss.”

Setting down the tablet, the technician drew closer to Martin.

“It shall be intriguing to observe how varying environments shall influence social development and assimilation, doctor.”

Martin’s slender fingers floated over the canopied glass like wild birds. His active mind churned with grand speculation.

“Yes, this experiment presents a unique opportunity,” Martin agreed. “After reincarnating, with no memory of their past lives, the fundamental and hypothetical question of the ages shall be determined. Which factor ultimately determines human development, is it nature, or nurture?”

Ruminating deeply, he wondered if making his private deal with the Archons, would, in the end, be worth it. Had he made a mistake? Would having agreed to resurrect the ancient spirits, bring about unforeseen, even disastrous consequences?

“I wonder which shall ultimately prevail to inherit the garden of Eden,” Doctor Martin speculated.

“Will it be good, or evil?”

A sly smile drew across Martin’s haggard but handsome features. No one, he was quite certain, not even Serenity Corporation, or the Archon spirits, possessed knowledge there was yet another sarcophagus secretly buried within the Arctic ice.

Momentarily silent, Martin grew enamored with the vivid implications of his own speculative thought.

“Imagine, if my own spirit, in combination with those of the four Archons, were to inhabit one immortal trans-human machine, shall I, have become God?”

Take an inside look at Zandian Pet with this thrilling excerpt.
He slipped out of the Great Hall ahead of her, taking the corridor toward the sleeping chambers and waiting around the first corner. The moment she rounded it, he stepped into her path.
“Erick.” She stopped with an audible inhale, her pale hair falling forward into her face.
He advanced. One step, then another.
She retreated. Not out into the corridor to the Great Hall, but backing up to the wall.
In a second he was upon her, pressing her small, lithe body up against the smooth pastel plaster, dragging his open mouth down the column of her neck.
He hadn’t meant to pounce, hadn’t even known he’d intended to, but the moment he had her caged, his senses exploded with everything Mina. When she lifted one leg to wrap around his waist, his last thin thread of control snapped. He palmed her ass cheeks and ground his heavy erection against her core.
“Were you punishing me, beautiful pet?” He thrust his clothed cock into the notch between her legs, registering the dampness coming through her fine white leggings. “Did you want to make me sweat in front of your father? You know he’d vecking kill me if he found out what I did to you, don’t you? One word from you and my life would be over.”
It thrilled him to know she held the balance of his life in her hand, as much as it seemed to thrill her to be handled roughly by him. He thrust again, hammering her ass against the wall. “You’re going to let me do it again, though, aren’t you?”
It was unbelievably bold, but he’d made Zander’s fortune with his skill at reading beings. He knew when he was going to get his way. How he’d won this victory, he had no idea, but he’d won it.
Her lids drooped, full lips parted as her head lolled against the wall.
“I’ll take your pretty pussy this time, beautiful. It’s what I should’ve done in the first place, not that I ever meant to claim you at all. I swear on the one true Zandian star, my only goal was to get you out of there.”
She wrapped her fists around his horns, sending a jolt straight to his cock. “I believe you.” Her husky tone made him even wilder.
He thrust against her alluring heat again. “You didn’t wait to be rescued, though, did you, sweet female?” He nipped her neck. “You saved yourself. But you stole from me, naughty pet.”
She used his horns to bring his mouth down to hers. “You’ll have to punish me.”

Trying to present my gear so the dirt didn’t notice was a waste of effort. Sergeant Gently certainly thought so. The bane-faced misery glanced at everyone’s spotless kit assembled on their beds, before glaring at mine as if it had just crawled out of his bottom.

“I trust you had an enjoyable evening, Cadet.”

I fixed my gaze across the room. “No, Sarge.”

“I’m desolated to hear that. Cos while you were guzzling your steaks and knocking back vintage vino, your team-mates were working to get their kit fit for battle-readiness.” He pushed his face so close, a faint spray of saliva hit my cheek as he snapped, “Tell me, Cadet, is your gear battle-ready?”

“No, Sarge.”

“And d’you think that is acceptable, Cadet?”

Norman. The name’s Cadet Norman.

“I’m waiting, Cadet!” The snarl in his voice made me realise his anger wasn’t just show.

Not sure where he was going with this, I remained silent. No point in talking up more grief for myself as I was in it up to my neck, anyhow.

“Where’s your whiny excuses?” He assumed a falsetto, presumably mimicking me, “Please Sarge, I couldn’t get out of it. I had to go. And by the time I got back, it was already Lights Out.”

His voice was back to ear-ringing normality, “Well?”

My tight-wound apprehension morphed into weary anger. Oh, get over yourself. You don’t come close to the Cap for lethal sarcasm, as it happens. “Doesn’t matter, Sarge. Whatever the excuse, I’ve let down myself and my team-mates by producing sub-standard kit.”

“Delighted that lesson has gone home,” he sounded anything but delighted. “Six demerits for Red Group. And you’re on a charge, Cadet. Extra drill for the next two evenings – and I don’t care if you’ve got more banquets to attend!”

Muffled gasps around the room confirmed my own stunned conviction that it was a savage punishment.

“Yessarge.” Saying anything else would’ve earned me more demerits.

The rest of the inspection passed in a blur while I tried to figure a way of getting Red Group within touching distance of the other two leading groups. And couldn’t.

Once Sergeant Gently stomped out to ruin someone else’s morning, Irena sank onto her bunk. “Prodding hells, but that’s dank.”

“Sorry,” I mumbled, shovelling my kit into the storbin under my bunk.

“Don’t know what you could’ve done ʼbout it. Tried to clean your kit last night, as it happens. But he came by and stopped me. Threatened me with two demerits.” She kicked her storbin. Hard. “If I’d known then what I know now I’d have ignored the prodder and done it, anyway.”

Raquel approached. “Hey, hitting the lead in the Group Shield like this sure takes the shiny off it. Why didn’t you explain the situation, Liz? He all but begged you to.”

She trying to be funny? Cos if she is…

But her twitched gaze was clear of any mockery.

I let out the breath I’d been holding and slumped onto the bunk, feeling like something voided into the recycling system. “He wanted me to ask for some spare air so that he could yell about fairness not coming into it. That I’d still let down my team-mates no matter which way you sliced it.” I shrugged. “All that stuff.”

“But he said about you not being able to get out’ve it. So he knew.” Raquel’s face was puckered into a frown. Somehow, she’d got the notion that fairness mattered. Which it doesn’t, unless it’s a military version of fairness. Which isn’t what a civi calls fair. She needed to be put straight. It’s a painful lesson to learn the hard way.

“You gotta see it through the Sarge’s viewfinder. Having me in his training group is a bleak break. Whatever happens, the high-ups will be breathing down his neck.” I rubbed my eyes, wishing I didn’t feel so tired. “He cuts me the thinnest slice of air, word will get around that he’s a sweetslimer. Whereas he knows that the General mightn’t like it if he gives me a hard time, but Norman will respect him.”

Raquel whistled. “Gods above, that’s dank! Glad I’m not breathing your air.”

I bit my lip trying to swallow my irritation at her tactlessness.

The day didn’t improve during brekkie. Romeo slammed his tray down so hard in front of me, half his vit-drink slopped out of the mug. “What d’you do to earn us six demerits, Norman?”

“Nothing, as it happens.”

He leaned across the table, his face flushed. “You must’ve said something—”

Irena put her hand on his shoulder. “Flush it outta the airlock, why don’t you? She was prone. Sarge was going for her jugular, anyhow and she played it like a pro.” Her admiration steadied me as she continued, “Don’t reckon I could’ve been so vac’d cool if it’d been me. You wasn’t there. Ask round. The girls’ll tell you the same.”

“Don’t encourage him! It’ll take us a long light year to peel him away from the girlies once he starts his sweet-talk routine,” I said, trying to scoop the pool of vit-drink out of my brekkie bowl.

They laughed. A bit hysterically, it’s true. But still, it was laughter.

Before Romeo’s face darkened again. “What’ll we do to get our hands on the Shield, now?”

I shrugged. “Don’t think we can do it. Maybe we need to make our prime objective getting through the Officer Training—ˮ

“Prime objective! Listen to yourself! You sound like those prodding button-jabbers. I didn’t sweat seed these last nine months just to come second.” Romeo turned to Irena. “You’re with me on this, yeah?”

“Like you, I want to win so much it hurts.” Irena crammed another forkful of rubbery egg in her mouth. “But we’re not gonna do it, so regroup. We got no choice.”

Romeo jumped up. “You spitless losers! First sign of strife and you’re on your backs with your paws in the air. I’ll figure how to put us back on top. An’ when I do, I’ll let you’s know!”

Irena cursed solidly for two whole minutes after he stormed off to sit at another table.

Romeo’s tight-lipped anger didn’t abate as we stomped up and down the drill square, or during our emergency space-suiting procedure. And his snarling refusal of help during our astro-navigation lesson had me wanting to smack some sense into the zilcher.

I had my opportunity. Unarmed combat was my favourite class. The Cap had us kids trained in the basics of self-defence from the age of five and since Wynn’s death, I’d spent long hours battling the KillerKombat avatar and working my way up the BalanceJoust levels – set on practice mode, of course. Having said that, I’d reached Level Eight, which was good enough to more than hold my own with the rest of the class, even vets like Irena.

We were warming up with a free practice session and David had just joined us, released from sickbay after a fast-acting phage had cleared up his bronchitis. I was in the middle of showing him how to break his opponent’s arm. As David didn’t have the stamina to survive any prolonged physical fight, I was working out a set of moves he could use to quickly disable his enemy.

Romeo tapped me on the shoulder. “Let’s do this.” He flexed his arms.

I blinked. “You sure ʼbout this?”

“Scared, then?”

I opened my mouth to answer. And got a faceful of Romeo’s hand for my trouble. The slap wasn’t sufficient to knock me down, but hard enough to split my lip and have me staggering. Stupid— Didn’t have time to curse my wet-brained slowness.

Launching himself, Romeo slammed me onto the practice mat with sufficient force to make my eyes water.

“Please, Romeo,” I yelped, flailing around for a likely hold.

He loosened his grip. “You quitting—”

Twisting round and out from under him, I grabbed his arm and pulled it back against the shoulder joint. “David? You get the arm like this. Then if you wanted to dislocate his shoulder, you’d continue pulling it round.” I tweaked Romeo’s arm till he cursed. “But that takes time and if he’s in a slink suit, he might have servos preventing that move. Leaving you exposed. Best option is to position it like this.” I jerked his arm up, forcing Romeo onto his knees. “Then you can jump on it…” I mimed the move. “Shatters the bone and takes all the fight outta him.” Letting go of Romeo’s arm, I sprang clear of him at the same time.

Meimi Archer is living the perfect life. Too bad it isn’t hers.

On my seventeenth birthday, I wake up in the hospital to find I just survived a sketchy but terrible accident. My parents stand by my bedside—both are beautiful, wealthy, and super-nice. They tell me that once I leave the hospital, I’ll attend the prestigious ECHO Academy, where I’ll churn out equations for the government along with my mega-smart peers.

So, I’m living the perfect life.

Then why does everything feel all wrong?

My parents, my house and even ECHO Academy…none of it fits. Plus, what’s up with Thorne, my brooding yet yummy classmate who keeps telling me I need to remember my true past, which seems to have included a lot of us kissing? That’s one thing I’d really like to remember, except for the fact that I’m pretty sure Thorne is hiding a ton of nasty secrets of his own, including the fact that he may not be from this world. But considering how my own past seems alien to me, it’s not like I can judge. Plus, Thorne has dimples. That’s a problem.

And worst of all, why does it feel so yucky to work on these calculations for the government? It’s all supposed to be part of ECHO, but my heart tells me that I’m helping something truly terrible come to pass. Thorne seems to think that kissing him again will release my real memories.

#BookBlitz…The Empryrean Gate: Part I…#BookBoost #Adult #Romance #SciFi #Giveaway @XpressoTours @SociallyRockwrd

The Empyrean Gate: Part I
Z. Rockward
Publication date: November 28, 2017
Genres: Adult, Romance, Science Fiction

In space, no one can fill your awkward silences for you…

At the turn of the 23rd century, Liam Boyer’s parents led the construction of the Empyrean Gate, an intergalactic spaceway to an advanced civilization with the technology to fix Earth’s environmental crisis. But when an extremist named Kin sabotages the Gate on opening day, he tears apart the two worlds—and Liam’s family. In the three decades since then, Liam has dedicated his life to bringing Kin to justice and seeing the Gate rebuilt.

Yona Kabul works on one of Earth’s trash satellites, assigned to salvage and recycle anything she can from the landfill before it’s fed to the sun to be disposed of forever. Just before her satellite’s suncineration, Liam arrives in pursuit of Kin, who has come to dig up a long lost weapon with the intent of using it to destroy the Gate once and for all.

When Yona is recruited to work with Liam, he has no intention of letting her slow him down. But the more she proves herself, the more he begins to see her value, in more ways than one. Soon they find themselves on a path with unpredictable twists, dangerous turns of the heart, and unimaginable stakes. Can they stop Kin before he shuts the door between the two worlds forever and dooms Earth to environmental disaster?

Goodreads / Amazon / Barnes & Noble / iBooks / Kobo

Liam fought back up, thrashing as a cord tightened around his arm. He slipped out his limb in time and climbed through the landslide to the mouth of the cave, closing before him. He managed to clear the rubble when his leg jerked back. A vine of cables coiled around his knee and up his thigh, while a layer of netting reached around his other foot, pulling him under like a monster swallowing its prey.

He tried to claw his way out but a wave of debris came over him. The pressure bore down on his physical armor, his last line of defense as his forcefield flickered out. He fought to take a breath, gasping against the crushing of his chest. A plastic sheet unfolded above him like the wings of a suffocating angel. The pit collapsed in a slow fold above him, obscuring his view of the stars.

He couldn’t die here. Not now. Not yet.

A woman shot out from behind the plastic sheet, shredding it with a bright laser machete. She slung aside clumps of plastic and sliced through the web tangling him.

She extended her hand to him. “Come on!”

Liam grabbed her hand and she fired the boosters on her boots to hoist him up. They whipped back, dregs of plastic clinging to his armor.

“Your armor,” she yelled. “Take it off!”

He hesitated. Her gaze was bright but steady under her helmet, her eyes hot pink. She was as if from another world. On a fantastical whim his mind wondered if she was an Empyr, somehow on this side of the universe—but he knew that wasn’t possible. She could only be human, and her request was inconceivable.

He kicked his feet, his limbs straining with the pull. “I’ll get torn apart!”

“You won’t make it out otherwise.” She tightened her grip. “Trust me on this. I’ve got you.”

He was now pulling her down with him, but she held on, steady and strong. She’d taken the risk to follow him down here, into the jowls of death. He realized that if he could trust anyone, he could trust her in this moment.

He released his armor, keeping his helmet but shedding the rest like molted skin. She pulled him free as the plastic crushed and swallowed the human-shaped shell he’d left behind. They vaulted above the crest of plastic, the pit stretching below them, an irregular, jagged landscape alive with agitated hunger.

He couldn’t see his ship—or Kin’s—anywhere.

They cleared the perimeter and descended near a hoverbike, the woman setting him delicately on his feet before landing herself. Her helmet unfolded into her collar, revealing a bun of purple hair atop her head.

“Second rule of the plastic pit,” she said, guessing his thoughts. “Always park out of its reach.”

His contacts scanned her face and identified her as Yona Kabul, the steward assigned to this satellite.

Liam retracted his helmet. He brushed away the bits of plastic stuck to his person. She was untouched.

“What’s the first rule?” he asked.

“Never enter the plastic pit.”

Playing Dead
Bronson Palmer
Publication date: November 7, 2017
Genres: Science Fiction, Young Adult

In the halls of Andrew Jackson High School, Jenaiya is a nobody. Less than a nobody. She’s practically invisible. An awkward, shy freshman, she very rarely gets any attention at all, unless she’s being harassed by the school’s multitude of bullies. In short, she’s not anyone’s idea of a hero.

But in ‘Age of Z,’ a post-apocalyptic multiplayer zombie game, she’s a gun-wielding, fast-talking GOD. She’s one of the top ten players in the online dystopia, and she doesn’t suffer fools lightly. It’s just the way she plays, and she likes it that way. She can become the person she wishes herself to be in the real world.

However, when the game gets overrun by trolls and n00bs who threaten to destroy the game by turning it into yet another online shooter, Jenaiya cannot sit still and let that happen. The very existence of the game is on the line, as people leave in droves, and she gathers a rag-tag group of players to fight back against this new kind of ‘brainless’ horde. They have wildly different personalities but one goal: rid the game of the real monsters.

Jenaiya will have to outsmart her enemies, outplay the bullies, and return ‘Age of Z’ to its former glory. Otherwise, it’s game over, and she’ll have to confront the real world that awaits her on the other side of the computer screen.

Goodreads / Amazon

Meet Jenaiya. She’s a survivor.
By Bronson Palmer

Meet Jenaiya. She’s the tough, flawed, sometimes misguided protagonist of ‘Playing Dead.’ A meek freshman at a particularly rough high school, Jenaiya spends most of the book trying to negotiate all the different areas of her life, from her online identity to her relationship with her family and her sexual identity. She’s not a simple character, and this is not an easy story to tell. It would be easy to make her an empty vessel for the events inside ‘Age of Z,’ but it was my goal to provide the audience with a believable, real character to identify with so each victory and defeat felt that much more credible.

When the novel begins, Jenaiya leads a fairly ordinary but unenviable life in Nashville. She hates school, because the school she attends is a haven for miscreants of all types. It seems as though everyone around her is a villain of some kind, and she is a constant target of their attacks. Her only refuge happens to be her favorite video game, ‘Age of Z,’ where she’s able to unleash her adolescent rage on an unsuspecting public. It provides insight into how Jenaiya feels the world really should run. She values fairness and fair play, loyalty, and integrity.

However, in the real world, beyond the confines of a digital asylum, rather than doing the right thing because it’s the right thing, she also gets caught up in the idea that “the ends justify the means,” which lands her in a whole heap of trouble. When it comes to bullies, especially teenage ones, it’s oh so tempting to fight fire with fire, but that usually ends up making things worse, as it does in ‘Playing Dead.’ Jenaiya wants to level the playing field for everyone, from the jocks to the dreamers and the jokers to the drama queens, but that’s not entirely how the world works, so the fuse she lights early in the novel eventually explodes right in her face.

Her digital world is rocked when her favorite game — really, the only game she plays — is trounced by new players who treat ‘Age of Z’ like your everyday, run-of-the-mill, cookie cutter first-person shooter. To Jenaiya, ‘AoZ’ is so much more than that. It’s a post-apocalyptic game, sure, but the world is built around relationships. See, in ‘Age of Z,’ players wander a vast wasteland in search of supplies. They can be found in buildings, abandoned cars, but the best place, by far, to hit the item jackpot is another player.

Only, players are tough to kill, and it’s much easier to work cooperatively with that person or negotiate peacefully to trade supplies. Think ‘FallOut’ without all the headshots. The game is loosely based on the experiential ‘sandbox’ games which have become popular over the past few years. Games like ‘Minecraft,’ ‘H1Z1,’ and ‘DayZ’ inform the gameplay, so if you’ve played those titles, you understand that the strategy lies not in quick-twitch mouse-and-keyboard murder sessions but in how you interact with the world and the other players.

What Jenaiya understands inherently, the new players do not, and it frustrates her. Being an African-American loner, Jenaiya feels yet another thing she loves get co-opted by society at-large, and rather than allow it to happen, she decides to fight back. She’s willing to befriend all of the different warring factions within ‘Age of Z’ to make that happen, if she has to. But she refuses — absolutely refuses — to give up on this game until she’s dead and gone.

That’s where the portmanteau character MICHONNEN_KNIFE comes in. I make a few sly references to ‘Fight Club’ throughout the book, and though the tone of ‘Playing Dead’ is nowhere near a Palahniuk novel, MICHONNEN_KNIFE is the Tyler Durden to Jenaiya’s normal Jack character. Where Jenaiya is meek and accommodating, MICHONNEN_KNIFE is uncompromising, and Jenaiya basks in every opportunity to live in that digital construction’s skin.

As a bonus, I decided to get a faux-D&D player card designed to show the audience just what MICHONNEN_KNIFE (+1 if you can guess both references embedded in the name) has to offer Jenaiya. Hope you enjoy perusing it, and if you’ve dug this blog post, you can get lots more obscure references throughout the whole of ‘Playing Dead.’

Touching Humanity
Erin Hayes
(The Rogue’s Galaxy, #2)
Publication date: December 2, 2017
Genres: Adult, Cyberpunk, Science Fiction

Looking for the first book in The Rogue’s Galaxy? Check out Touching Infinity, part of the Dominion Rising Boxed set!

My name is Clementine Jones. I’m more machine than human, with a sketchy past and an even dimmer future.

I’m the new captain of the Pícara II. I brought down the spaceport of one of the largest companies in the galaxy. I’m secretly infected with a ticking time-bomb of a virus. I’m in love with an android who’d rather erase the memory of our kiss than deal with the aftermath.

I’m scared shitless of what to do next. And I’m definitely not hero material.

But the ruling corporations of the galaxy have just made their last markdown on the price of human life. That is, if I have anything to say about it. And I aim to bring them down.

Goodreads / Amazon

“Louis? Louis, I can’t see you.”

Suddenly, the lights on the space station go out, throwing me into complete darkness. The pitter patter of the leaking coolant stops as well, leaving me in sensory deprivation as I don’t feel the wall anymore.

“Clementine.” He sounds so close. Like he’s right in front of me.

“Louis!” I reach out.

Suddenly an overhead light pops on, like a beacon in the darkness. It blinds me at first and I stagger backwards, shielding my one eyes from the brightness.

And in front of me is a table. Not just any table, though.

The table.

The table where Louis had been sitting at while he tried removing my infected hand. Where he became infected himself, and…and…

And became a part of the table. He melted into it, becoming something that was no longer man and no longer table. Something that was no longer biological and no longer inanimate.

Something other.

It’s in front of me right now, illuminated in this space in front of me.

“Clementine,” Louis says, and I know that it’s indeed coming from the thing in front of me. I find that I’m shaking my head, feeling like the lost little girl from so long ago.

“No,” I whisper. “No.”

“Help me, Clementine. Help me.”

I don’t know how. I have the vaccines hidden away in my quarters back on the Picara II. But that’s in another plane of existence, thousands of light years away. There’s no way I can get to them in time. No way I can save the man who saved me from the horrors of Dark Horse-1.

“I can’t!” I cry out. “I don’t know how.”

“Please…” Louis says. From what mouth, I have no idea. It’s like he’s speaking directly into my mind. “Please help me, Clementine. Like I helped you.”

“I…I don’t know how…” I whisper brokenly. My fingers flutter above the table, and I’m not sure if I should touch it. If I do, I could get infected.

Yet, right now, that’s all I want to do.

“You did this.” I hiss a deep a breath as the harsh words cut through me. Louis’s tone has changed now, into something harsher, more sinister. “You did this to me.”
