Total Exposure
J.A. Huss
(Jordan’s Game #1)
Publication date: January 16, 2018
Genres: Adult, Romance, Suspense

Not everyone needs a master. Not everyone needs to really live, either. Some people are content to be a participant in the game of life. Others want to play for real. If you want to play for real, come to me, lovely. I’ll give you that little push you need. I’ll open your mind, and your world, and soul. Lay you bare. Let you feel the heat of my stare. Take you places you’ve never been before. Your body is my chessboard, sweets. And if you give in to me, and you play, you might even win. It’s just… your prize might not be what you went looking for.

Goodreads / Amazon / Barnes & Noble / iBooks / Kobo

“What the fuck are you wearing?” Jordan says, eyeing my leathers.

“What every goddamned biker wears,” I snap. He’s wearing a goddamned suit that looks like it costs as much as that car I left back at Rachel’s sister’s house.

“You rode your bike down here?”

“Long. Story.” I close my eyes to signal that I’m not in the mood to tell said story, and he takes the hint. Because he knows me just as well as I know him. “Why the hell am I here?”

He stares at me. Looks me up and down. A whole scenario flashes in my mind in the time it takes him to reach down to pick something up off his desk, where he says, I found her. Or, She found me. Or, You wanna go to dinner with us? Because we’ve got reservations at the Grant. And he means her and him, as in the whole thing about us that made us an us in the first place.

But of course, he doesn’t say anything like that. He says, “Here’s the job,” waving a large yellow envelope, handing it to me. “Everything’s in there. Just…” He sighs and pinches the space between his eyes—stupid fucking Jordan gesture—like I’m the one on his last nerve, and not the other way around. “Just do it, OK? And be super fucking discreet. This is all anonymous. You do not show your face. You do not make any sort of contact. It’s strictly surveillance. Got it?”

I rip the envelope open and take a peek. Two keys, two bound stacks of hundred-dollar bills, which should be twenty thousand dollars, and some paperwork. “Is it legal?” I ask, taking out the stack of papers.

It’s a dossier—female. Mid-twenties. Dark hair and gray eyes—for one Evangeline Rolaine.

“Of course it’s legal. Why does everybody always ask me that? I’m a goddamned lawyer, everything I do is legal.”

“Yeah.” I laugh, reading the woman’s short bio on the top page. “You’re a goddamned lawyer, all right. Why does this name sound familiar?”

Jordan eyes me, waiting to see if I’ll take that first comment any further, and decides I won’t—and he’s right. Because after the morning I’ve had, I can’t think of a single reason I need to rehash the past too. “She was famous once upon a time.”

“Child prodigy,” I say slowly, reading her bio at the same time. “Yeah, I remember this chick. She was all over the TV when she was a kid.”

“Right. And then she wasn’t. It’s your job to watch her. That’s it. Just watch her. You got it?”

“Watch her do what?” I ask, flipping through the pictures.

“Just… everything. Nothing specific.”

Why am I watching her? Someone after her or something?”

“You don’t need to know why. You just need to take that money, buy the fucking equipment, go to that address, put up the fucking cameras, and then when she gets there, you watch her.”

“So I’m spying on her and she doesn’t know it?” My laugh is loud. Because… “That’s some creepy shit, dude.”

Jordan sucks in a breath of air. It’s cautious, that inhale. It’s long too. And it’s filled with all the things that we left unsaid between us after college. “She knows,” Jordan finally says. Carefully. Like he’s picking his way through a minefield. “Just… just fucking do what I tell you. You’ve got a week to get set up and then a few weeks of surveillance, tops. Then I’ll pay you.”

“I don’t need the money, asshole. You know that’s not why I’m here.”

I hear the unasked question. He hears it too. Then why are you here?

But he knows why.

Updrift
The Mer Chronicles Book 1
by Errin M. Stevens
Genre: Paranormal Romantic Suspense

Since her father died, Kate Sweeting’s home life has been in the pits, her well-being on life support. Her future looks desolate until she and her mother, Cara, make another plan: abandon their shriveled existence for more promising prospects on the coast, where Cara can play small-town librarian-bachelorette and Kate can figure out what’s up with that secretive Blake family from the beach.

Everyone is eerily captivated with Kate and her mother, and Cara is the first to figure out why when the man of her dreams arrives all dripping and devoted and closed-mouthed about what he intends. Kate is willing to go along with their subterfuge for a while, but eventually makes a charge for the water to learn what her mother is hiding. Gabe Blake is there waiting for her…and so is someone considerably less friendly. By the time Kate navigates her way home, everything will have changed for her—what she feels, what she wants, and what she’ll risk to be with the man she loves.

Breakwater
The Mer Chronicles Book 2

The sirens of Griffins Bay are in trouble, and the recent slew of royal suicides looks to be the least of their worries.

For one, unless a blood relative of the queen shows up, no one’s around to staff the monarchy. Well, except for a whack-job bureaucrat and he seriously won’t do. Worse is the community unrest threatening siren society, a problem caused by too many humans in the pool, which means Simon and his off-limit girlfriend will have to run and hide if they want to make more of their flirtation…

The solution doesn’t inspire confidence at first, but the Blakes have everything at hand to set their world to rights – namely, a hidden queen, a dead prince, and a facility for human manipulation. Once they find their sea legs, they’ll restore order, distribute smart phones, and drive that conniving bureaucrat to a grisly, satisfying end.

Errin Stevens writes paranormal fiction and reads practically everything she can get her hands on. She’s currently working through the Time 100 with all her rabid reader buddies at Carpe Librum, and will think about posting reviews if she can get to it… Her first novel, Updrift, debuted Nov. 2015; and the sequel, Breakwater, released Nov. 2016.

PROLOGUE

“What are you doing here?” The tension around me palpable, she hurried aside to let me enter before closing the door behind us.

My blood boiled.

My skin crawled that she’d let him do that to her.

I had to get rid of it.

The taint.

Purify her.

“What have you done? You’re mine, Evie. I told you, when I came back, you’d be mine and now look at yourself.” Disgust was as clear in my voice as it was in my expression.

“Wh-whatever it is…we can talk this out,” she stuttered, her feet inching her backward as I followed her movements.

Reaching to the small of my back, my fingers wrapped around the grip as I pulled it from its sheath. The eight-inch blade caught the glint of the afternoon sun, mesmerizing me, causing me to admire the play of light against it before I focused on the woman before me.

Her eyes shone with terror. “You don’t…” She shook her head left to right, swallowing hard, stumbling against the side table next to the sofa. “You don’t have to do this.” She righted herself. “We can still be together. Now that…now that you’re back–”

I shot her an incredulous look. Did she think me a fool? “You’ve gone and done the unthinkable. You had his child!” I hollered, my knuckles gripping the knife tightly. “This is the only way…the only way to get rid of the stain.”

Her steps froze momentarily. “Stain?”

“It’s what I should have done a while ago,” I spat, cornering her as her steps were halted by the wall at her back. “What you took from me…what should have been mine,” I raged, “is what I’ll take from you.”

One moment my eyes darted toward the hallway where I knew the devil lay in slumber, and the next, Eva Peters was making a mad rush toward the door that separated me from saving us all.

“No!” she panted. “You’re crazy!”

If she only knew. “Move, Evie,” I growled, “it’s the only way.”

“She’s not here. Please!” Tears streamed down her face, her body shaking with fear.

Using the tip of the blade, I ran it over her soaked cheek, the metal sharp enough to catch on her ivory skin, causing a streak of blood to suddenly materialize.

I felt lighter instantly.

Powerful.

In control. A feeling I hadn’t had in quite some time.

Manning my knife, I proceeded to run the tip of it down to her bottom lip, nicking it just enough for another bubble of her essence to form.

“Mmm…” I groaned, leaning forward to press my front against hers, taking the time to lick her damaged lip, then whispered my new realization while rubbing my impossibly hard cock against her stomach. “I was wrong. This…” I ran my finger through the blood on her cheek, watching its movement, “is what I need, Evie.”

The sadness was overwhelming as I stared at the beauty laying limp and lifeless beneath me.

The rage I’d felt had all but dissipated with each slice of my blade through her flesh. Like a hot knife through butter, each time blood began to pour out, a weight lifted within me.

What once held pleading in her eyes, was now long gone.

She was nothing but a piece of art, trussed up by her silk scarves, a vessel conveying my message.

I’d be back…

THE SIEGE: A NOVEL
Award Winning Author Marilyn Baron
The Siege: A Novel
Genre: Contemporary, Women’s Fiction, Romantic Suspense, Mystery, Historical
Publisher: The Wild Rose Press
Publication Date: January 8, 2018
A journey of self-discovery leads to love and passion in the search for a family’s hidden past…
Artist Theia Constas receives a tour of Italy from her grandmother as a college graduation present. Before she departs, her ya-ya’s deathbed revelation of a cache of WW II photographs and love letters extends Theia’s itinerary to Crete in search of her unknown grandfather, a promising artist who studied under Chagall but didn’t survive the war.
Wade Bingham, an actuary who always follows the rules and calculates the odds, finds himself alone on his honeymoon trip, wondering why his fiancée jilted him at the last minute.
In the wrong place at the wrong time when their hotel in Florence, Italy, is besieged by terrorists, the two strangers find themselves thrust together in Wade’s honeymoon suite. Immediately attracted to each other, Wade conducts a siege of his own to win Theia’s heart.

“Go back to your room,” the American tour director ordered, shouting at the woman.
“I can’t get the door to open,” Theia protested, thrusting her key card at him in frustration.
The tour director hurriedly took the proffered card in sweaty hands and tried the lock, which didn’t click. He jammed the key card into the slot again, to no avail.
A man opened the door and stuck his head out of the room. “What’s wrong? Is this some kind of a fire drill?”
“It’s no drill. Get back in your room and shelter in place until I give the all-clear. Don’t open the door to anyone.”
The tour director returned Theia’s card. “Get back in your room with your husband.”
“This is my room, but he’s not my husband,” Theia insisted.
“There must be some kind of mistake,” the man in the room announced. “This is my room.”
The tour director grabbed the woman’s key card again and examined the key holder. He shook his head, rolled his eyes, and looked at Theia like she was a recalcitrant child. “You’re on the wrong floor, miss. This is Room 515. You’re in Room 415.”
“I’m sorry.” Theia blew out a breath and turned to leave. The tour director blocked her way.
“Excuse me, but I need to get back to my room.” Tears of exhaustion pooled in her eyes. She wanted to scream.
“I’m afraid you can’t go anywhere. We’ve disabled the elevators for your safety, and hotel security is blocking the stairs, for now.” He ushered her into Room 515 and pushed her into the arms of the man standing at the door.

Shane

I watched Emberlyn’s hips swing from side to side as she sauntered-stomped back to her house, thinking that not even Eva would have stood up to me like that. It brought a smile to my face; the first one of the day, as a matter of fact.

The reality that I would have to reiterate the house rules, and discipline my daughter, had me quickly filling with dread. Being a parent sucked ass when it came down to making sure your kid toed the line. I’d much have rather had a playdate at the park.

Turning to enter the house, I found Rosie curled up on Mom’s lap, sobbing into her chest. Mom gave me a sympathetic look, her eyes pleading me to go easy on her.
“Lana Rose, come here,” I demanded softly.

She shook her head, burrowing further into my mother. “Please don’t take her away. I don’t want to lose Ember. She’s my friend. She’s fun. Don’t make her go away, Daddy.” My heart broke that she thought that of me. “Why would you think that, sweets?” Crouching down to her level, I lifted a hand to push back the strands of hair that had fallen from her ponytail.

“You’re the police,” she said simply, turning to look me in the eye with an incredulous expression. “You make the bad people go away. Ember wasn’t bad. I was. She doesn’t deserve it if you make her go away.”

I gave her a sad smile. “Baby girl, I’m not going to make Ember go away.” I paused to weigh my next words carefully. “But we are going to talk about the rules again, okay?” She nodded, settling her head on my mother’s shoulder. “What’s the first thing we do when we leave school?”

“Go straight home,” she said. “But, Daddy, I was just so–”

“I know you were excited, Rosie. I understand that, but I need you to understand that you have people who will worry that something bad happened, if you don’t do as you promised,” I explained.

She bit her bottom lip, stopping it from its quivering. “I promise I won’t do it again, Daddy.”

Leaning forward, kissing the side of her forehead, I whispered, “That’s good enough for me. Don’t scare me and your grams like that again, please.”

“I won’t.”

“Good.” I smiled, gifted with one in return from my girl. “Now go get cleaned up for dinner.”

“Okay.” She jumped off Mom’s lap and made her getaway. Pausing at the hallway entrance, she turned to me. “Daddy?”

“Hmm?”

She seemed to think about what to say, as if she wasn’t sure she should say it at all.

“What is it, Rosie? You can tell me anything.”

“You should maybe say you’re sorry to Ember.” With that, she was out of the room and out of earshot.

Mom spoke next. “She’s right. You were a little harsh on her, dear.”

I had been.

I guess I’ll have to rectify that and soon. Once Rosie was in bed, and Mom was engrossed in one of her favorite programs, I snuck out of the house. Brycen had sent me all the information he could gather on Emberlyn. I’d spent the better part of the evening digesting what I’d read, wondering, what with her past, how she’d managed to stand up to me as she had. It didn’t take a genius to know that I was an imposing man, but with what she’d been through, I sure as hell wouldn’t have expected her to hold her own.

Suffice to say, I felt like a total asshole. My knuckle met the wood of her front door, rapping on it three times. I attempted it twice more before she opened. “Listen, when someone doesn’t open after your first knock, and they’re home, it usually means that they don’t want to see you,” she snapped, crossing her arms over her chest. “Now, if you don’t mind, I’d like for you to leave.”

“I’m sorry,” I blurted. “I overreacted, said a bunch of shit I didn’t mean. You didn’t deserve that.”

“I didn’t deserve a lot of things.” She huffed. “But it doesn’t mean I didn’t end up with it either. Apology accepted. Now get lost.”

She went to slam the door in my face, but I stuck a booted foot out to block its progress.
“Come to dinner tomorrow night.”

That got me a wide-eyed look. “Are you out of your mind?”

“Let me make it up to you,” I told her. “I know one little girl who’d love to know she hasn’t lost a friend because her dad reached a new level of asshole.” She seemed to ponder my words, so I pushed further. “Please?”

“On one condition,” she said.

“Uh…” I didn’t know what to say to that.

“Rosie gets to come over tomorrow. I promised her we’d make her lip gloss today, but I never went to pick up some of the ingredients I needed for it, so I said we’d get together tomorrow,” she explained.

“That’s it?”

“That’s it.”

“I have no problem with that.” Her lips stayed in a firm line at my words, but her eyes shined with pure joy. Fuck, I liked that look on her. Probably more than I should.
Looking down at my foot, I clued in that she was silently asking me to pull it back.

“What time’s dinner?” she asked, the defensiveness gone from her voice.

“Is six okay, or am I taking you and Rosie away from your project?” I smirked.

She smiled. “No, six should be fine.”

“See you then,” I replied.

“Goodnight, Shane.” Without waiting for my response, she shut me out, the sound of a lock engaging lending to our conversation’s finality. Sass.

The woman had plenty.

And I was a fan.

“Goodnight,” I said to her door, chuckling as I turned to head back home.

‘Are you my mummy?’

Tessa Markham comes home to find a little boy in her kitchen. He thinks she’s his mother. But Tessa doesn’t have any children.

Not anymore.

She doesn’t know who the child is or how he got there.

After contacting the police, Tessa comes under suspicion for snatching the boy. She must fight to prove her innocence. But how can she convince everyone she’s not guilty when even those closest to her are questioning the truth? And when Tessa doesn’t even trust herself…

A chilling, unputdownable thriller with a dark twist that will take your breath away and make you wonder if you can ever trust anyone again. Perfect for fans of Gone Girl, Girl on the Train and The Sister.

What readers are saying about Shalini Boland:

‘What can I say? Just wow. I’m usually never surprised by an ending, but this one blew me away. I am totally in shock and think I’ll have a hangover from this book for a while. A great read that keeps you on your toes until the very last word.’ Stacey Harrell, Goodreads

‘If anyone can have me reading until 2am and finishing a book in less than 48hrs in the school holidays it’s this author… massive five stars from me.’ Sarah Mackins, UK Crime Book Club, 5 stars

‘The plot is gripping and once you’ve started reading, you have to keep on reading, you need to know how the story will end.’ Bits About Books, 5 Stars

… one of the most chilling reads of the year for me. Ajoobacats Blog, 5 Stars

‘This is a brilliant psychological thriller. In fact, it’s one of the best I’ve read. It is full of suspense and has more twists and turns than a fairground ride.’ Jackie Roche, UK Crime Book Club, 5 Stars

‘I thought I knew the direction this story was going go. Then the jaw dropping moment happened!… unputdownable!’ Goodreads Reviewer, 5 Stars

‘Once again, Boland has managed to blow my mind with all the twists and turns… an outstanding explosive read!’ Mello and June, 5 Stars

Happy New Year, Intellectual Minds!  This is my first book review for 2018.  I feel so invigorated.  What a way to start off the reading year!  So, let’s get it going.

As usual, Boland never lets her readers down!  She always takes you down one path and you end up in a completely different location.

What would you do if you came home from work and found a cute little doe-eyed brown haired five-year-old boy sitting at your kitchen table drawing pictures and coloring them in?  If you expected this adorable child to be in your home, there wouldn’t be any cause for alarm, but if you don’t have any children, all sorts of bells and whistles should be sounding off!

Tessa Markham could not believe her eyes.  This child sat at her table as if he belonged, and Tessa knew full well that this child did not.  Did she call the police as soon as she discovered this child?  No!  When she questioned the child as to how he got to her home, he wasn’t forthcoming with information.  All he managed to say was “an angel brought me here.  Are you my mummy?”

Totally shocked and terrified, Tessa called her estranged husband.  Of course, Scott would know what she needed to do, right?  Hmm, Scott appeared agitated that she even called him.  When he arrives at his former home, he’s just as shocked as Tessa to see this child sitting at the table drawing and coloring like he doesn’t have a care in the world.  Harry, as they learned of the boy’s name, seemed happy to be within his element, so why were these two adults looking at him like they were crazy?

Scott became outraged with Tessa that instead of calling the police straight away, she called him.  What kind of responsible adult would do that?  Because Tessa was so distraught, Scott finally calls the police and they come and investigate the situation.   Of course, the police separate all parties.  Tessa is trying to keep it together, but suddenly she gets a sinking feeling about Harry.  She doesn’t want to see this child ripped away and placed in foster care.  Perhaps she went about this situation all wrong, or did she?

Well, readers, this is where our story takes flight.  As usual, Boland has a way of twisting plots in a hundred different ways until you’re so confused as to who is doing what, you’re not clear what is happening, until the ending smacks you in the face.  What an incredible story Boland has managed to tell.

This story was really good and it reads pretty quickly.  Once you get started, it’s hard to put the book down.  I have to say, though, this storyline didn’t make me earn it like some of Boland’s other novels.  It’s a good story, but for me it came off as a bit predictable.  Once I figured out a few scenarios, it wasn’t too hard to put two and two together.  However, having said that, it doesn’t deflect from the story and it’s very entertaining and keeps you on the edge of your seat.

Mello & June gives The Secret Mother four mummy hi-fives.  As you journey along with Tessa and all that she’s been through and what is going to eventually happen to her, you’ll be hard pressed to put this book down.  Actually, if you have a few hours to set aside, you could read this book in one day, it’s that damn good.  Boland, as usual, always keeps her readers front and center.  Another masterpiece from the author of twisting plots.  Great job!  Until next time, Intellectual Minds, keep on reading!

A Harmless Little Game
Meli Raine
(Harmless, #1)
Publication date: October 18, 2016
Genres: Adult, Romance, Suspense

Four years ago I lost my virginity on live, streaming television.

Too bad I wasn’t awake for it.

The video went viral. Of course it would. A Senator’s daughter on camera? Wouldn’t you click “share”? Besides, that’s what three of the four guys in the video did.

Share.

They shared me.

But that fourth guy? The nondescript one in the background in the upper left corner of the screen, just sitting on the couch? The only one who did nothing?

Not one single thing.

That was my boyfriend, Drew.

And that was the last time I saw him.

Until today, when my father—now on a path to the White House—hired him as head of security for my new team as I return home after four years of “recovering” in an undisclosed location that involved white lab coats, needles, pills and damage control.

You see, the other three guys never went to jail. Never had charges pressed.

Never faced consequences.

Until today.

Game on.

A Harmless Little Game is the first in this political thriller/romantic suspense trilogy by USA Today bestselling author Meli Raine.

Goodreads / Amazon / Barnes & Noble / iBooks / Kobo

FREE for a limited time only!

Short, clipped chestnut hair. Brown eyes the color of well-worn leather, eyes that blaze with intelligence and a guardedness no one could ever breach. He’s bigger than the last time I saw him, four years ago. Broader. More muscular. He’s a controlled, contained man who has a James Bond air to him.

And he’s looking at me right now with eyes so cold they might as well be icebergs.

“Lindsay, let me introduce you to Andrew,” Stacia starts.

Drew. Oh, God, it’s true.

“Andrew Foster will be your new security specialist. He and his team will keep you safe.”

I snort.

He stares.
Stacia’s eyes leap from Drew to me and back. “Is there a problem?” she asks, brows turning down. That’s more emotion than I’ve seen in her for four years. Her gaze darts between me and Drew, assessing the situation. No matter what, I lose if she decides something’s going sour here.

Even if Drew is the one gone bad.

“No.” Drew and I say the word at the exact same moment, in the same tone of voice. It sounds like a sharp clap, a single sound that shatters noise.

“You two know each other?” Stacia asks, her fingers caressing the paper. Without that discharge form, I can’t leave. If Drew ruins this for me, it will be the second time in my life he’s fucked up.

The first time was four years ago when he let three of our friends rape me.

Author Bio:

Meli Raine writes romantic suspense with hot bikers, intense undercover DEA agents, bad boys turned good, and Special Ops heroes — and the women who love them.

Chapter 1

Shane

Eight Years Later

The moment I walked over the threshold, I knew a clusterfuck of epic proportion awaited me. Blood was everywhere. Spatter by the front door, smears over the walls, and droplets leading to where I  new the victim would ultimately be laying in a pool of her life’s essence.

Forensics was going to have a field day with this one. Just like with the other fifteen. Donning the protective gear the lead officer had ordered me to change into before entering the scene, I made my way toward the back of the house.

Carefully avoiding one evidence marker after another, I entered the master bedroom. The grizzly sight of Victoria Spark’s mutilated body, lying face up on the bed, greeted me. The standard ligatures on her wrists and ankles proved that she’d been restrained and alive through most of her torture; the killer leaving her to die in excruciating pain from her wounds and ultimately, blood loss.

The scent of copper on the air thickened as I made my final approach, slipping my hands into a pair of plastic gloves. I was looking for something I knew was meant for me.

Setting my evidence kit down beside the bed, I bent toward the body in search of my next clue. The sickening crack of the victim’s jaw set my stomach to roiling as I pulled her mouth open, locating the three pieces I had come to expect after so many years of chasing this perp. Letting go of the victim, I grasped my digital camera and photographed my findings. Setting the camera down, I whipped out the small evidence bag from my kit and opened it, manning my tweezers.

Fishing the objects out one by one, I dropped them in the bag, then photographed them again. Fragments of a photograph were what this sicko leaves. Camera in hand, I shot a few frames of the room, as well as the rest of the premises. The team would have their own photos, but I liked being thorough with my investigations, thus preferred gathering my own shots, comparing them with the others’.

Closing up my kit, I stood to take my leave.

Fucking sadistic bastard and his games.

It pissed me off that he was always one step ahead of me.

Thinking on those tiny pieces—the unknown subject, or unsub’s calling card—I was confused more than ever as to why he was leaving them at every scene. The letter I’d received at the precinct, a week after the first murder, had eluded that they were all part of some demented countdown…a puzzle of sorts. One thing was clear however, the perp was after me, and after sixteen murders, I still wasn’t any closer to finding this guy.

In my career as a detective, I’ve come across a lot of questionable characters. I’ve done my fair share of arresting the dregs of society and making enemies along the way. You can’t be a cop without that happening.

“I take it that Rosie is in for another disappointing birthday dinner?” Will asked, coming to a stop at my side as I exited the victim’s home.

For the last seven years, it had been the same fucking story. That in itself was enough to confirm that the unsub was gunning for me. That, and the fact that he’d started this spree of his claiming none other than my wife as his first victim.

My only problem was, my list of suspects had next to nothing. This perp was meticulously careful. Treating his kills like artwork: from the placement of limbs, to the blood spatter surrounding the victims…even those fucking pieces.

“I hate going back on my promise,” I growled. “She’s going to be pissed.”

“I know it’s your case, Shane, but I’m your partner,” Will said. “Take a few hours, go to her, then come back if you have to.”

I nodded. “I have what I need right now. You sure you can handle everything without me?”
He patted me on the back as I straightened from the body and backed away. “I’ll call if something comes up.”

Thanking him, I handed him my evidence bag, then made to leave the scene, my camera and evidence kit in tow.

Caught up in my own memories, I drove home on autopilot, scenes from eight years ago playing in my head.

The same black hair. The same look of terror in her open eyes.

Eva had been bound too.

And cut up.

Blood. God! There’d been so much blood everywhere.

I’d been the one to find her. I hated to think what would have been had my Rosie been there that day.
“Daddy!” was squealed, knocking me out of my grizzly thoughts.

Opening the car door and letting myself out, I caught her as she launched herself into my arms.

My princess.

The light of my life.

I Broke Into His Office
Jessica Frances
(Love at First Crime #4)
Publication date: December 17, 2017
Genres: Adult, Romance, Suspense

He broke into his office, and had his heart stolen in return.

I broke into his office,
But I didn’t have a choice.
So what if he is good-looking?
So what if he is single?
So what if he is my type?

Why should it worry me that he could easily overpower me? Who cares if what I’m doing is wrong and illegal? I can’t second-guess myself, even if there is the possibility of more between us. The risk is too great. The threat all too real. Unfortunately, my life is about to implode, And the least of my problems is an irate private investigator. When old threats return, And new threats—mainly four scary women—attack, The best thing I can do is just keep my head down and ride it out. Then, why can’t I stop thinking about him? Why do I find him so irresistible? And what happens if I make one mistake and lose him forever? Because this is quickly becoming far more than either of us could have ever imagined, And the life and death stakes mean neither of us can mess up. I can’t believe breaking into his office has led to all this. Then again, as some people say: there is nothing quite like love at first … crime.

Goodreads / Amazon

“It’s dark out here,” he grumbles.

I feel a little warmer hearing the concern in his voice.

“I make sure all the workers leave in groups. No one is allowed to walk out here alone, and we have an open group chat where everyone writes in once they get home safely,” I assure him, never having a problem in the four years I have had this restaurant. Everyone knows my rules. Even the lunch staff adhere to them.

“How about you?” he asks, tightening his arm around my shoulders.

“I sometimes leave with the others, but …” I give a small shrug. “I only live around the corner,” I finally explain.

I understand why Harvey is bringing this up since he’s all about protection and noticing dangers, but what I don’t expect is that the one night I walk home with Harvey is also the night we are jumped.

Hands grip us both, separating us as three dark shapes surround us. I barely see a thing before a foot connects with my knee and I lose my balance. Then I’m kicked in the chest, losing my breath, only to then be hit in the face hard enough to see stars.

I try to think through my panic, my body shaking as I hold up my hands to protect my face from the next hit, but it doesn’t help when I’m dragged backward and thrown into a wall.

My back hits the hard surface before I collapse. The snow soaks into my clothes as I feel a surge of anger rush through me.

I leap to my feet and clock the guy who threw me. He clearly isn’t expecting it and is furious when I make contact. However, he is built like a tank, and though I do knock his face to the side, his actual body doesn’t move an inch. My hand, marginally protected by my glove, aches from the impact.

I gulp, feeling way over my head, and spare a glance to Harvey, who seems to be holding his own better than I am, fighting two men.

The next second, I’m shoved back against the wall, a hand over my throat. He isn’t holding me tight enough to choke me, just forcing me to stay in place.

I kick the guy in the shins, attempting to knee his groin, but he leans back. Then something sharp scrapes my cheek, and I freeze.

“What do you want?” I wheeze out, still struggling to breathe after the hit to the chest. “My wallet is in my pocket,” I offer, dread building inside me when I consider this is a mugging.

“I’m not after your money,” the man snarls, his face in shadows.

“What do you want, then?”

“See your boyfriend over there?” he asks, leaning back so I see Harvey on the ground, one man holding him down while another punches him in the gut.

“Let him go!” I shout, fearful because he’s no longer fighting.

“He had a hit out on him—a hundred large for anyone who could kill him—but that disappeared a few hours ago,” he explains while I struggle to follow. “Mr. Conway wiped the hit off. But he wanted you to see how easy it is to get to you both. He wanted you to see how simple it would be for me to take this knife”—he drags the sharp edge across my cheek, cutting me and causing warm liquid to spill down my face—“and shove it through his heart.”

“No,” I beg, to which he laughs like he finds this conversation amusing.

“Don’t worry, little fairy; your boyfriend isn’t dead … yet.” His voice turns sharp.

I hold my breath, waiting to hear what the condition is, because I know there is going to be one.

“Mr. Conway is going to call you soon. Make sure you answer it.” With that, he pushes off me, and I collapse back down to my ass. He whistles at the other two men, and they step away from Harvey, who immediately curls into a ball, groaning. Then they all sprint out of the parking lot and out of sight as I try to get my shit together.

Because sometimes, the virtuous are as frightening as the sinful…

Sins will weave you into their webs. They become the Vice you’re unable to shake. There are the values, taught from birth, which ride a razor’s edge. They turn into Dark Virtues, a twisted mockery of their true meaning.

Pride, envy, lust, gluttony, anger, greed and sloth all have their place in the tapestry of life. They are the Vices who lost sight of the Virtues: charity, temperance, forgiveness, humility, kindness, chastity and diligence.

Enter the worlds where the tales of the most sinful of Vices and the darkest of Virtues will entice and intrigue you…

…for even among the most devout there is a dark side.

This is my stop during the book blitz for There be Demons by M. K. Theodoratus. This book blitz is organized by Lola’s Blog Tours. The book blitz runs from 1 till 14 December. See the tour schedule here.

There be DemonsThere Be Demons
By M. K. Theodoratus
Genre: Paranormal Suspense
Age category: Young Adult
Release Date: 26 September 2017

Blurb:
Heroes come in all shapes.

The war for Andor has lasted a century. Humans and their allies, the Angeli, fight demons from another plane who need a warmer planet to hatch and raise their young. Trebridge becomes Ground zero when Abraxas, a minion of the demon Prince Vetis, opens a secret portal into the city. The demons’ goal is to build an army to subjugate the city before the humans realize they are under attack.

Standing in the demons’ way are two disparate groups: the humans of Andor and their Angeli allies who command gargoyle warriors.

Leading the four gargoyles guarding Trebridge is Gillen, a proven war hero who uses magic to fight demons. But Gillen is an outcast, mocked for his tuft of hair that normal gargoyles lack. It’s up to him to prove once and for all that he’s worthy of his command, in spite of dissention in his ranks. When Gillen asks the Angeli Commanders for reinforcements to fight the growing demon menace in Trebridge, headquarters send four human teens from the projects.

The leader of the humans is Britt, a 14-year-old half-Hispanic girl who is one of the four magic-possessing Chosen. But Britt was never trained in the art of magic, and like most girls her age, spends her days preoccupied with school and romance. Like Gillen, she must rise above her station in life–if she is to save the ones she loves.

But Gillen and Britt are facing formidable demon foes, Abraxas: a chicken-headed demon who possesses several humans as part of his plan to build the demons’ base in Trebridge and power-hungry Prince Vetis who is his commander. Neither will let the deaths of expendable humans get in their way of the conquest.

In There Be Demons, author M.K. Theodoratus spins a brilliant tale of good versus evil. In this thrilling Young Adult fantasy novel, unlikely heroes rise to challenge a relentless enemy. Join them as they risk everything to save their city.
