Happy New Year #Fans and #Followers

We at Mello & June, It’s a Book Thang! would like to wish all our Readers a very Prosperous and Healthy New Year!  We also hope you enjoyed your holidays.

So, did you meet your reading challenges last year?  If not, you have a brand new slate to start all over again.  You know, it seems strange because I could have sworn I just had this conversation with you like a minute ago, but it has been an entire year. Can you believe how fast 2016 went?  I believe that was the fastest year on record, or is it we’re getting older and time seems to be flashing before our very eyes? Hmm, no matter, we’re excited about getting this year underway.

When thinking about your reading challenges, it is our feeling that you not set a goal that is too high, but a challenge that is more reachable.  Lots of times I check Goodreads and I see many challenges unmet.  If you start out with, let’s say 10 books, that’s easy to meet.  However, if you say you’re going to read 250 books by year’s end, and you have a job, family and a side hustle you also have to devote time to, how on earth do you expect to meet that challenge?  So, we at Mello & June try to make a habit of making reasonable challenges that we’re sure to meet.  Of course, if you read more than you thought, you can always update your challenge, or make it less, if you don’t think you’re going to come even close, which is why we suggest to our avid readers that you set a goal that is comfortable and works with your schedule.

If you’re not familiar with Netgalley.com, you should definitely give them a try.  It’s a great way to read new authors and check out some of your favs, by requesting books that will be hitting the book shelves at a store near you. They have lots of great titles and genres to choose from.  If you’re a book blogger, such as we are, it’s a great format to let your readers know what you thought of a book.  Remember, you should always give a good solid review. Every author appreciates feedback, whether that feedback is good or bad.  A true author knows that in order to get better, you have to know where your weaknesses are. And while we’re on the subject, please remember, when giving a bad review there are respectful ways in which to do it. Whatever you do, never attack an author.  I’ve seen that done many times on social media and it’s not a pretty sight. What you should do is think about how you’d feel if you were the author.  You certainly wouldn’t want a reader attacking your character based on something you’ve written. Reviews should be solely about the book, how the characters impacted you; how the story made you feel, etc.  But please never make it personal with the author.  That just isn’t a good practice to be in.

Hopefully, you had a great New Year’s Eve and you’re not too hungover from the night before, but if you are, the good news is, you have another day to get yourself together, and especially your reading challenges.  As you continue to support our book tours we bring to you, please send us your comments on books you’ve read that you may have seen on our site.  We love to hear from our readers!  And since we’re kicking off the new year right, we’ll be starting a “mystery” giveaway starting in a few days.  You’ll be able to enter right here on our site, or through our Facebook page.  So be on the lookout for that.  What we can tell you is, you’ll receive an eGift card to a popular store, something warm to wear, something fun to watch and a miscellaneous item that you probably never expected.  In other words, it‘s a box full of winter goodies.  We’re sure you’ll like it.

In closing, remember to set reasonable reading challenges, write a solid review and get to reading.  What the heck are you waiting on? Before you know it, we’ll be at this very same spot, thinking…”weren’t we just here a minute ago?” Yeah, that’s how fast a year goes. You truly do not have any time to waste. Happy Reading Intellectual Minds!  Let’s make this our best reading year ever!
