Happy Endings Book Club Boxed Set Books 1-3
Kylie Gilmore
Publication date: January 10, 2018
Genres: Adult, Contemporary, Romance

Book 1: Hidden Hollywood
She’s on top…

When superstar actress Claire Jordan researched her role for the Fierce Trilogy movies, she never expected the bond she feels with the author and her romance book club aka The Happy Endings Book Club. Soon Claire finds herself confessing her secret longing for a regular guy—no more egocentric wealthy players—and the book club is all too ready to help. In disguise as a regular girl, she’s all set for a date with book-club-approved Josh Campbell.

He’s on top…

Billionaire tech CEO Jake Campbell is weary of gold-digging women, especially the glamorous superficial types. So when his identical twin, Josh, calls in a favor, asking Jake to step in as him on a date, Jake figures one of Josh’s cute girl-next-door types might be just what he needs. One night of passion with the sweet girl next door leaves Jake wanting more, except she seems to have vanished.

Sometimes a Happy Ending is just the beginning.

Book 2: Inviting Trouble
Madison Campbell has worshipped her older brother’s best friend, Parker Shaw, for as long as she can remember. So the night before he leaves for the Air Force, she decides he’s leaving town with her virginity. All she has to do is transform her tomboy self into a sexy woman with a bit of borrowed makeup and some creative fashion choices. The results? One drunken kiss that Park doesn’t even remember.

Ten years later, no man has ever gotten close to her heart the way Park did. And now that he’s back, the very unfeminine Madison refuses to blow her second chance. But when her bold attempts to snag his attention (“Oops! Dropped my towel.”) fail miserably, she does something completely insane—she caves to a makeover from the meddling matchmaker in charge of The Happy Endings Book Club. Hey, Park, you want some of this? Madison is about to find out.

Book 3: So Revealing
The last thing Charlotte Vega needs is a cocky HOT stuntman like Ty Campbell in her life. But when he pulls the ultimate stunt—a sexy romantic gesture that ends with a charming invitation to a sunset dinner cruise—she finds him impossible to resist. Cue disaster.

Their rocky first date goes from bad to worse when his yacht (okay, it’s actually borrowed) gets stranded in deep mud. Turns out there’s nothing Ty can do but wait hours and hours for high tide with no power, no way to cook dinner, and a hangry sexy-as-hell woman.

But Ty is determined to salvage the date so he starts a game to pass the time. Only what Ty learns makes him realize he may have just botched a date with the perfect woman. How will he ever win her now?

Claire bit her lower lip. “Dammit. This is why I can’t have real relationships. I can’t trust anyone.”

“You can trust me.”

She sighed. “I don’t even know you.”

“Get to know me.”

“Jake…” She looked away.

“One date, the real deal. Jake and Claire.”

She was tempted. He could tell. She didn’t give him a no right away and now she was searching his face, looking for the truth. He leaned forward, brushing his lips against hers, coaxing. He pulled back and met her eyes, fully prepared to do this all night if he had to. Coaxing, charming, easing his way in. He’d thought coaxing would be too difficult with the way he wanted her, but having her pull away was much harder.

She spoke quietly. “You don’t want that kind of spotlight on you. It’s not pretty.”

It wasn’t a no.

“I want you, and whatever comes with it, I don’t care.” He cradled her face with both hands. “I want Claire.”

She closed her eyes, and he dropped his hands to her shoulders, sliding them down the satiny smooth skin of her arms to her hands. He took her hands from behind her and pulled them forward, just holding them. She didn’t pull away. He sensed she was leaning toward letting him in.

Finally she spoke, the words filling him with elation. “We’d have to keep it quiet.”

Not that he wanted to keep it quiet. He just wanted to be with her so much he was willing to play the game her way. For now. He kissed her softly and spoke against her lips. “Is that a yes?”

“Yes.” She shoved him away. “Now stop kissing me. One date. Jake and Claire.”

“Why do I have to stop kissing you?”

“Because you want to get to know me, remember?”

“I can get to know your body first. Get reacquainted.”

She laughed. “Yeah. I’ve heard that one before.”

He figured she probably did. Everyone wanted the sexiest woman alive. He’d seen the magazine giving her that honor and her bikini body splashed everywhere. He knew that kind of attention didn’t always bring out the best in people, and he realized he had to stand out from the pack.

He stepped back and helped her off the table.

“Such a gentleman,” she teased.

“It’s all an illusion,” he replied, not bothering to hide the edge of unsatisfied lust in his voice.

“Story of my life,” she said breezily. “I’ll text Hailey to let you know when I’m free.”

“At least give me your number now that we’ve established how much you lust for me.” She laughed, and he grinned. “I’d like to stop going through other people.” He pulled his cell from his pocket, punched in the code, and handed it over.

She typed her number in while saying, “I never give this number to anyone. Only a handful of people have it on a need-to-know basis. Can you handle that kind of responsibility?”

“What do you think?” It was an honor and, hell, he’d earned it with all his restraint.

She met his eyes, fire back in hers. “I hope so. I swear I will hunt you down—”

He cut her off with a kiss. Not a gentle one. The kind that said he’d be taking what he wanted and she’d damn well like it. She sagged against him.

When he was good and ready, he broke the kiss and snagged his cell from her limp hand. “Later, Claire Jordan.”

She fought back a smile and then beamed a big one at him, stunningly beautiful in her well-kissed, hot-for-him state. “Later, Jake Campbell.”

He grinned and headed out the door. Now that was more like it.

Just Say (Hell) No
Rosalind James
(Escape to New Zealand #11)
Publication date: February 14, 2018
Genres: Adult, Contemporary, Romance

Even a hard man needs a soft side.

Marko Sendoa isn’t a beach man. He’s not an Auckland man. He’s a hard man. Born Basque, raised in the heart of New Zealand’s Southern Alps, and bred on hard work, discipline, and getting the job done. It’s not easy for a rugby flanker to make it to age 32 at the top of his game, but he’s done it. Next year is the Rugby World Cup, and he’ll do whatever it takes to be on the field in the black jersey when the anthems are sung.

He doesn’t need a kitten.
He doesn’t need a pregnant cousin.
He definitely doesn’t need a too-short, distractingly curvy, totally unimpressed Maori barista and part-time pet portraitist who fills his house and his life with too much color, too much chaos, and too many secrets.

He’s getting them anyway.

Goodreads / Amazon

Ahead of him, the girl looked tense. The running was new, probably. Felt too hard. That had to be it, considering the speed she was going. He caught up and said, “Excuse me.”

She whirled on him so fast, he started running backward out of habit.

“I have Mace!” she announced, all but baring her teeth.

Oh. She’d heard him coming up behind her. He blinked, realized he was still jogging backward, stopped, and said, “Uh . . . no, you don’t. But no worries. You don’t need it.” There wasn’t room to conceal more than a car key in that kit she was wearing. A flippy little zebra-print skirt, and a black sports bra that dipped low enough in front to show some cleavage. She was a curvy little thing and no mistake. Not that he was looking. She was advancing on him like the stroppiest terrier in the litter, and despite her aggression, he could see the fear underneath.

First the pub, and now this. He didn’t scare women. He was careful. He put up both palms and said again, “No worries.”

She seemed taken aback for an instant, but recovered fast. “I’m not worried,” she said. “But maybe you should be, eh.”

A hint of a Maori accent there. He considered explaining that he liked blondes, but she opened her hand, and bloody hell, but she did have a tiny metal canister laced between her fingers, together with her keys. An older couple was coming toward them with a Golden Retriever on a leash, and Marko had a sudden flash of his photo in another newspaper. Staggering around, tears streaming from his eyes, Maced on a bush track after attacking a jogger. That would be a good look.

Brilliant.

#BookRelease…Working The Count…#BookBoost #ContemporaryRomance #Giveaway @MoBPromos

 WORKING THE COUNT
by Jeanine Binder

Genre: Contemporary Romance

Working the count (definition) – When a batter is patient in his at-bats and tries to get “ahead in the count” or to get a pitch that he can hit hard.

Montero Salazaar was a master of this in his private life. He was always looking for the home run and never the strike out; contrary to how he wanted things to go when he was in a game. Being a major league pitcher only helped to enhance the number of girls wanting him in their bed and he knew how to lay down the smooth line at the exact right time. His life was an open book – at thirty-two years old, he had all the time in the world to play and have fun, making his presence known on every tabloid imaginable. Each day brought the promise of a new encounter, leaving him sated and satisfied without having to look in the rearview mirror.

But then came Casey and his aunt, Annie. Being with her, he felt like he had been doused with a vat of ice water and now wide awake – looking at life (and love) so differently. Montero wasn’t used to women who weren’t throwing themselves at him and how could Annie be changing him so dramatically? And why was he suddenly more interested in spending an afternoon coaching an eight-year-old with baseball tips than finding someone to spend a sexy night with?

Was this his one chance for love rather than being destined for one-nighters? Can he really change and make himself a solid person for Annie to love? Or were his teammates right and this would all blow over like a late-night storm with no true love in sight?

“What’s up?” Montero asked cautiously, setting his phone back down on the locker floor, looking the guys over to make sure they didn’t have anything to spray him with, or dump on him. Practical jokes were a way of life in the locker room and you had to always keep your guard up. All four of these guys were ganging up on him – all bets were off. He knew they had an agenda of some kind.

“Salley,” Mike Robbins, the first baseman started. “Salley” was the nickname his team all called him as a joke, which didn’t bother him. Some of his teammates had worse nicknames and he knew they’d thought they were being cute by giving him a girl’s name. “You’re up to something and we want to know what. You know you can’t keep secrets from us.”

“I have no idea what you guys are talking about,” he retorted, but couldn’t hold back the smile on his face. He knew he should keep a poker face, but something inside wanted to tell his team the truth. He was feeling good about his relationship and he felt he could talk about it openly. Now might be the opening he’d been waiting for.

Mike pointed his finger at him in an accusing manner. “That’s what I’m talking about. Look at that shit-eating grin on your face. Give it up, Sal. What have you done?”

Montero wavered, going over the pros and cons in his mind, whether to tell them about Annie. He was still surprised at the whole relationship himself and he knew he was in for an onslaught of teasing from his teammates once he came clean with them. But he didn’t have a clever way to dodge the situation and figured they’d all have to know sometime. He took a deep breath and blew it out, facing his teammates and swallowed once before starting. “Well, I sort of have… a girlfriend.”

There was silence for a moment then the four guys around him just burst into laughter. The kind that makes your eyes water and your stomach hurt. Montero watched patiently as they all dropped either onto the bench beside him or onto the floor – the hoots of their amusement making him wish he’d just kept his mouth shut. It was inevitable they would find out and he’d figured he’d take the easy way out by telling them, but from the sound of things, that was even going to go south on him. He wasn’t finding their laughter very amusing, trying to be tolerant until they were finished. He knew this was coming but still…

“Not sure what’s so funny,” Montero interrupted.

“That has to be the best thing I have heard all week,” David answered. David Ruston was a reliever – usually brought in at the seventh inning to carry on for the starting pitcher, and had followed Montero on the field more times than he could count. “Montero Salazaar with only one woman – Salley, I can’t get my head around that thought. And I know this has just got to be some whim you’re on. A dare someone made? Or a bet…that’s it. Someone is paying you to do this…”

“No one’s paying me to do anything and it’s not any kind of bet,” Montero said, fixing David with a stare. “This is a whole new world for me. I haven’t been to a club or out with another woman in almost three months. Tell me that isn’t serious, thank you very much.”

Mike nudged David in the ribs. “She must be a hot tamale in bed then.”

The guys all went back off in another fit of laughter. Montero stood up, finishing getting dressed. He was too tired and cranky to continue feeding their amusement. He’d earned every bit of their disbelief and harassment, but he didn’t need to have it all tonight and he wasn’t interested in taking anymore. “Laugh it up guys,” he said, finally. “If you want to see for yourself, get off your asses and come down to Riverside Ball Park at four tomorrow. You can meet her and then you’ll see I’m legit.”

Just as he got to the locker room door, he heard Mike’s voice behind him. “It won’t last, Salley. You don’t have the moxy to commit to just one woman. I give it another couple of weeks at most – things will be back to normal. I’ll even put a C-Note on it.”

I’ll be at the Booking in Biloxi event – March 24th at the IP Casino, Biloxi, Mississippi.
I’ll have signed copies on the table for $7 and you get to meet DeLonn Donovan (the model on the cover).

Jeanine Binder grew up in a small town in California on the outskirts of Palm Springs, where the Hollywood celebrities liked to vacation. After thirty years, she packed up, moved to Arkansas where she still lives today. Her hobbies include her writing, reading good books, and seeing exotic places (loves to go on cruises).

by Aubrey Wynne
Genre: Contemporary Romantic Suspense with Historical elements

A tortured soul meets a shattered heart…

Jackson Hahn, Virginia Beach’s local historian, has his eyes on the mysterious new woman in town. When she arrives in Pungo, he is struck by her haunting beauty and the raw pain in her eyes. Her descriptions of the odd events happening in her bungalow pique his curiosity.

The sexy historian distracts Chloe with the legend of a woman wrongly accused of witchcraft. She is drawn to the story and the similarities of events that plagued their lives. Perhaps the past can help heal the present. But danger lurks in the shadows…

Chapter 1
January, 2006

Four Seasons Riding Stable

Chloe sat straight up, willing the fog in her head to dissipate. The bed sheets were twisted around her ankles. Sweat trickled down her back. The terror froze her limbs while she struggled to calm her thudding heart and listen for the sound all horse owners dread. But it was the smell that made her realize this was not a terrible dream.
Smoke.
Instinct took over and she scrambled from the four-poster, making a beeline for the back door and the barn. Her toe smacked against the corner of a wall as her eyes adjusted to the darkness. Oh god, not my babies. Not Bunny. Panic weighed down her legs as her bare feet hit the gravel. Everything seemed to move in slow motion. She tried to run down the long driveway, her eyes riveted to the red-orange flames shooting up into the black sky. Paul emerged from the darkness, his face colored yellow from the fiery glow. He signaled for her to take the front of the building as he disappeared around the back.
The frigid night air slapped her awake, but a horrifying screech from a panicked horse kicked in her adrenaline. Chloe reached the big, sliding doors and tugged them open. Heat smacked her face, and the smoke assaulted her lungs. Coughing, tears running down her cheeks, she slid back the bolts and opened the stall doors. On the other side, Paul’s voice faintly reached her over the crackle that filled her ears.
“Hiya! Move it, move it.”
The fire had consumed the other half of the barn where the arena was located. Above her was the loft, filled with winter hay and the last of her savings, now adding fuel to the already intense blaze. She pushed the thought from her mind as the flames shot through the center of the alleyway and the arena caved in.
Grabbing one of the lead ropes that hung at each door, she smacked the first horse on the rump and sent him flying out of the barn. The first three horses on each side followed their stable mates into safety with little persuasion. But Duchess, her mother’s old mare, wouldn’t budge. Chloe threw the lead rope over her neck and forced a calm tone. “Easy, girl. That’s my girl. Walk on, now. Walk on.”
The old horse snorted and pranced but followed her out of the stall. When they neared the opening, she withdrew the rope and whacked Duchess’ hindquarters. With a leap, the horse disappeared into the gray haze. The acrid odor of scorched hair and burnt wood filled her nostrils. Embers popped and her cheek blistered. She wiped at it with her shoulder as she led two more horses out by hand.
Crack!
Above them, a beam gave way and formed a fiery V. The horses must have sensed it also because they lunged ahead, snapping Chloe’s shoulders forward. She struggled to maintain her balance but fell to the matted floor, her knees striking the hard rubber. A boom behind her sent a spray of sparks, and pain shot along her backside. From the corner of her eye, she saw a strand of her hair spark. Frantically, she beat at it with her bare hand, putting it out on her neck. The heat was sweltering now. Images wavered in the flames that licked at the dry timbers of the remaining stalls and the heavy beams above.
Scrambling to her feet, Chloe ran outside into the frigid night and stumbled down the drive to help Paul. As she reached the other side of the barn, she doubled over as a coughing spasm racked her body. Hands on her knees, gasping to pull air into her tight chest, she heard Paul yelling over the crackle and whinnies.
“Bunny won’t leave the stall, and won’t let me near her foal.”
“What about Jack?”
“He’s good. C’mon, the roof is gonna give.”
His hand tightened around her arm and pulled with such force her feet almost left the ground. Plunging back into the smoking hell, they entered Bunny’s stall and found the foal in the corner.
“Paul, I’ll get the foal then Bunny will follow.”
Another loud snap from above. She grabbed the lead rope dangling from the horse’s halter and handed it to the trainer. Running a palm down her mare’s neck, she spoke soothingly, “Atta girl, Bunny. There’s my girl. Let’s your get your baby out of here.” The mare’s ears perked at her voice and words. Chloe tossed a rope around the foal’s neck and pulled. The baby gave to the pressure and followed Chloe out.
Behind her, a loud, splintering crash was followed by a shrill squeal. Her stomach twisted as she turned to see her trainer pulling at the lead rope. A fiery beam pinned Bunny as she thrashed, her legs flying in the air. One hoof caught the man in the head, and he crumpled to the ground.
Fighting for air, her chest a tight ball of agony, Chloe stumbled back in and grabbed Paul under his arms. She dragged him with the last of her strength and shuffled backwards until her feet tripped on something solid. She fell, his body tangled in her legs as they both landed with a thud. A sob ripped at her raw throat at the sound of a muffled shriek. Tears spilled down her burning cheeks as she shook the lifeless body on top of her. Chloe collapsed hand rested on Paul’s chest, finding hope in the slight rise and fall of his shallow breathing. In the back of her brain, the sound of sirens wailed before the world went black.

 FOREVER AND ONE DAY
by Jacqueline Simon Gunn
Genre: Contemporary Romance
Publication Dates: Paperback on February 6th & Kindle on February 13th

Everyone has wondered “what if?” But how many get a chance to live it?

Seventeen years ago, Olivia Watson’s world was turned upside down when she discovered Justin, her high-school sweetheart turned fiance, having sex with her best friend, Petal. Unable to muster up any forgiveness, she turns her back on him and every friend connected to that part of her life, leaving many questions about the details of the betrayal unanswered.

When Olivia receives an invitation for her twenty-year high school reunion, she decides that she’s been avoiding the past for too long. It’s time to go back and revisit that part of her life, her old friends, and the betrayal that created the wedge between them.

As soon as she and Justin lay eyes on each other at the reunion, they immediately sense the vibrant remains of their unbreakable connection. The spark between them never faded. However, Justin is now married to Petal and Olivia is involved with Adam, her handsome, best-selling-author boyfriend. But is healing old wounds enough for Olivia and Justin to move forward together, or will it help them make peace with the new lives they have chosen?

Each of the four main characters remain bound to their past by unresolved issues, demonstrating that sometimes we can’t find our future until we settle our past. But, most importantly, Olivia learns that forever isn’t time eternal; rather, forever is a place we share with the people we love the most – even when they’re gone.

“Have you thought of me at all? Was there ever a time when you wondered ‘what if?’ I have been driving myself nuts thinking what if.”

“There was never a ‘what if’ for me. You slept with my best friend. I’m not upset about it anymore, but it’s the reality. I did think about you. I missed you, but I wouldn’t let myself feel it, not deeply at least. The pain. When it came on, I pushed it aside. Then ten years passed. And I find out you married her. Married. If there had ever been a ‘what if’ it was taken away when I found out that you were married.” She put her hand over her mouth. That last sentence spilled out. She didn’t even know that she thought it until it slipped past her lips. Would there have been a second chance if he hadn’t married Petal?

And for the first time, she admitted to herself, perhaps, yes.

Now she looked at him and felt the what if washing over her. The desire to touch him, to remember how his lips felt kissing her mouth, her skin, her hair, felt irresistible. She gulped.

He stared into her eyes and she felt a kiss coming. Their faces hovered in an awkward dance as their mouths drew closer. She could feel the warmth of his breath against her lips. My gosh, she shivered, leaned in, then quickly pulled back. She broke the eye contact. Trying to shake the sensation, she gulped down some wine. “Justin. We can’t.”

“I know.” He responded. But she could see the longing in his eyes. And the love, she could feel it, enveloping, like she was immersed in a deep sea surrounded by Justin’s feelings. She ached for him to touch her. As much as her words said we can’t, and as much as she was saying no in her head, her heart was saying please kiss me.

Please just grab me and kiss me before I can say no.

Mica Rossi has been writing since she was in the second grade and barely able to form her letters properly. Her first book, Once in a Blue Moon, is a paranormal romance and was selected as a spearhead novel for Melange Books’ White Satin Romance line. Her second published work, Heart Songs, is a collection of short stories and poetry about the human heart and all its boundless emotions. Other works have been featured in several anthologies, and she’s furiously scribbling through various drafts of her second full-length novel, a contemporary romance set during the Christmas season.

Now working as a paralegal to pay the bills, Mica hopes to someday make writing her full-time career. Of her own stories, she says, “I love the juxtaposition of an urban setting against elements of magick or faerie, demons, ghosts or mythical creatures. There’s something that draws me to those pockets of our universe where the laws of physics can be ignored, or at least trifled with. If Only… is one of those stories.”

She stopped crying and opened her eyes, and he swore to God in that moment, when her large blue eyes latched onto his, when he felt a jolt of recognition run through his body, that this was his kid.

Except she was scarier than him, especially as her mouth opened wider and she let out a roar that would scare the crap out of a bear. What the hell was he going to do? Jack. Jack knew about babies—he had two.

He grabbed his phone and called his friend. “Yeah?”

“I have a situation,” he managed to choke out.

“Take a cab.”

“No, you idiot, I’m not wasted, I’m at home. You need to get over here. Now.”

He heard grumbling, muttering, and then finally, “Be there in ten.”

“Wait. Bring baby things.”

“What?”

“Baby things. Like, whatever a baby would need to, you know…live.”

“Oh man, this is starting to sound really bad.”

He hung up the phone and looked down at the baby. His daughter. Or Tess Junior, as the name on the birth certificate stated. He was going to have to change that when he applied for paternity. If he applied. If she was his.

Author Bio:

Victoria James is a New York Times and USA Today bestselling author of contemporary romance.

Victoria always knew she wanted to be a writer and in grade five, she penned her first story, bound it (with staples and a cardboard cover) and did all the illustrations herself. Luckily, this book will never see the light of day again.

In high school she fell in love with historical romance and then contemporary romance. After graduating University with an English Literature degree, Victoria pursued a degree in Interior Design and then opened her own business. After her first child, Victoria knew it was time to fulfill her dream of writing romantic fiction.

Victoria is a hopeless romantic who is living her dream, penning happily-ever-after’s for her characters in between managing kids and the family business. Writing on a laptop in the middle of the country in a rambling old Victorian house would be ideal, but she’s quite content living in suburbia with her husband, their two young children, and very bad cat.

Ray

November 19, 2015

Some of what Albert said, I can relate to. For me, it isn’t about cheating with a younger woman. It’s hard for me to regret the years that I’ve spent with my wife or my five beautiful daughters—four of whom are my biological children—but I do feel guilt over the way I left Sarita. How I paced the living room in our apartment the day before, rehearsing what I was going to tell her, replaying in my mind what she would probably ask in response: “Why?” She’d want to know why, just as anyone who thought they were happily married and was told every day by their spouse that they were, too, would. I did love Sarita, but, at the time, I didn’t love her enough to stay married to her. I didn’t know how to tell her, so I just left without explaining myself.

There’s a loud knock on my car window. “Ray, you’re blocking the garage. Pull around.” Eve is standing there with her iPhone in her hand, in a charcoal pantsuit with a belted peplum jacket that I’m sure came from Saks, as most of her clothes do. Her face is fully made up with lashes and perfectly arched brows, and her hair that has changed colors dozens of times is golden brown now and in a layered pixie cut. She’s coming from her job as a pharmaceutical sales manager that she’ll retire from at the end of the year.

I start the engine and pull around our circular drive, remove the mail from our mailbox, wait for Eve to park, and then park between my wife’s company car and her Mercedes G-Wagen. I check my cell phone to see if she replied to my I-love-you text the way she used to. She didn’t, and she doesn’t stop to greet me, either. She marches her red-soled heels into the house, cursing about her laptop.

“I had to take time out of my hectic schedule to drop off my laptop at Computer World. I’ll still have to pay a hundred and twenty dollars just for labor whether they fix the damn thing or not. What a fuckin’ scam?”

“What’s wrong with it?” I ask as I look through the mail. It’s all junk, including a letter from my mom asking for money.

Eve shrugs. “I don’t know. Maybe a virus or malware. The screen froze, and everything went black. I hope I didn’t lose my files. I need those for work.” Eve snatches my mom’s letter out of my hand. “Who does that woman think she is? She’s always asking for money. We’re not an ATM. If she needs a loan, she owns a four-family flat. She can take out a second mortgage on it.”

“Eve, babe, that’s my mom.”

“And? Didn’t you tell me you’ve never been able to call her Mom? What kind of mother is that? I’m glad I never met that woman. She has some serious issues.”

I change the subject back to Eve’s laptop. “You’ve had that thing for at least fifteen years.”

“I hold on to the things I love. It’ll be ready tomorrow, but I’ll be in Savannah and won’t be back until after they close.”

“I can pick it up for you. I don’t want you to stress. What else do I have to do? I’m retired.”

“I thought you wanted to teach. Wasn’t that the whole reason for getting a master’s?” She drags her words as she says, “I don’t need you to pick it up. I’ll get it.”

Eve stands in front of the open refrigerator. “There’s no food here. I thought you were going shopping. Next week is Thanksgiving, and the stores will be busy and out of my favorite things if you wait until the last minute. Did you order a HoneyBaked Ham yet?”

“I’m trying to give up pork.”

“That’s you. I need my HoneyBaked Ham for Thanksgiving and so do the girls and whoever they bring with them.” I don’t want to argue, and I can tell if I say another word that’s what it’ll lead to. Eve slams the refrigerator door and wanders into the walk-in pantry. “What are we going to eat?”

I walk into the pantry and slide my arms around her small waist. “I know what I have a taste for.” I start to kiss her neck. Eve’s petite. Even in her three-inch heels, my head is above hers. I always wanted to be taller, around six-two, and being with her makes me feel taller.

“Does it honestly seem like I’m in the mood for that?” Eve pushes me off of her and walks back into the kitchen. For better or worse. My wife needs to know she’s wanted. She longs for that. So I snuggle up behind her and place my arms on her waist.

“You’re never in the mood anymore. What happened, huh?” I kiss her neck. “You used to want it all the time.”

Used to. I’m sixty-three now. There’s more to life than sex.” She places a firm grip on my wrists and pushes down to break free. I know couples go through things. And we’re definitely going through our thing right now. “Look at me,” she says. I stare into her baby-blue eyes. “Look at me the way you used to when we first met.” I try again, but she huffs. “Forget it.”

“What? I’m trying.”

“You used to stare at my face as if you were in a trance. You would tell me how beautiful I was. How beautiful my eyes are. You don’t do any of that anymore because I look old, much older than you. My face and neck are wrinkled, but you still look the same, only you’re bald now, and I’m glad because you had an obsession with your wave cap.”

“I had the best three-hundred-and-sixty-degree waves, though. I miss those.”

“I prefer your bald head.”

“I’ve gained weight,” I say. I feel as if it’s necessary to point out my flaws. The major one had been my teeth. Through the years, they had become slightly discolored from drinking coffee, and I had a chipped tooth in the front from the time my mom threw me down the stairs. As soon as I started making money, I got a natural-looking set of veneers. But I have other flaws that aren’t physical, and only I can fix them.

“There’s nothing wrong with your weight, Ray. You have a little pooch. So what. For years, you had ten percent body fat.”

“It was actually nine percent.”

She shakes her head and frowns. “My whole point is that your stomach is only noticeable to you.”

“I wear glasses now.”

“Those tortoise-shell frames make you look younger, and you only wear them for reading.”

“They’re progressive lenses. I should wear them all the time, but I can’t get used to them.”

“That’s the thing about glasses, you can take them off. I can’t take these wrinkles off unless I get a face-lift, which I’m not about to do. Stop trying to make yourself look bad so I can feel better. You know you look good because there’s never a shortage of women around who aren’t willing to tell you.”

I laugh. Eve has quite an imagination. “Women don’t tell me that.”

“My girlfriends tell me all the time how handsome you are.”

“They may tell you, but they don’t tell me.”

“I’m sure some of them do, and you’re probably too afraid to tell me. I’m sure they’ve probably come on to you, too.”

“Never, and you know I don’t play that. One of your friends? That’s a line I’d never cross.”

“I hate when a woman, a wannabe cougar, asks me how much older I am than you. When we were at Murphy’s for dinner the other night, and you went to the restroom, a woman sitting at the table next to us got out of her seat, came over to me, and asked me that. She then had the nerve to look surprised when I said, ‘Ten years.’” Eve places her mug on top of the drip tray of our Keurig and waits for her coffee to brew, which won’t take long. “‘Oh, is that all,’ she said. She thought I was even older.”

“She probably assumed I was a lot younger. I don’t think her statement was any reflection on you. It couldn’t be, because you’re still sexy.”

“Sexy?” Eve watches as the coffee fills her cup. “That’s the word men use when they can’t say beautiful.”

My wife is vain. She’s lost her sense of security, which was tied to the compliments strangers dished out to her over the years. It took me a while to realize how much stock Eve put into her face. She doesn’t care about long hair, not after women started wearing weaves, and all of a sudden if you had enough money, you could have enough hair. She wasn’t standing out, so she chopped hers off a few years after we got married. When she told me that she was getting her hair cut short, I tried to talk her out of it because I’ve always loved seeing women with long hair. But when I saw her hair short, she was even more beautiful. The haircut brought out all of her facial features: her high cheekbones and straight nose, those blue eyes, her dimples, and best of all her smooth skin. There’s only one other woman who had skin softer than hers, and I married her, too.

The heads didn’t stop turning for Eve after she cut her hair. In fact, more heads turned. Now, though, they don’t, unless they’re checking out her clothes, because if there’s one thing my wife knows how to do, it’s put an outfit together. I know she can’t handle that loss of attention, and it’s my job to build her back up.

“I don’t see wrinkles. I see Eve. The same beautiful woman I married twenty-six years ago.”

“How sweet,” Eve says sarcastically as she places her hand against my cheek and pats it twice. “How sweet.” She walks out of the kitchen with her cup of coffee and up the stairs and slams the bedroom door.

I don’t know how to please my wife anymore. Maybe that’s why I’ve been having chest pains. My heart aches.

Meet Ray and Sarita Saint. In 1987, they pledged to love, honor, and cherish each other until death. When Ray goes missing a year later, Sarita wonders whether he’s dead or alive. While she was dreaming of their happily ever after, Ray was exploring greener pastures, a new relationship. Sarita—a virgin until marriage—took her vows seriously and believed Ray did, too. Instead, he left their marriage and their life in Detroit to reinvent himself. Sarita always held out hope that he would return one day. And he does. It’s twenty-seven years later, and Ray is determined to find his one true love. What he discovers has him question everything he thought he knew about Sarita, as well as himself.

Can You Really Find Love on the Job?

My husband and I met while working at a private high school. He taught math while coaching football and baseball. I taught chemistry and coached cross country and track.

We might never have talked outside of polite conversation at staff meetings, except for the fact we had a handful of matchmaking students in common. Have you ever been around hormonal teenagers especially near Valentine’s Day? They latched onto the idea that the single teachers at the school really should get married and brought up not-so-subtle hints about every other week.

A raised hand and an out-of-the-blue question. “Do you like football?”  followed by a chorus of ooo’s when I nodded. A paper valentine on my desk signed by “Mr. Fick” (as if he wouldn’t use his first name). His players gave him a membership to a Christian dating site and presented it along with a photocopied, enlargement of my yearbook mug-shot.

We might have avoided their blatantly-embarrassing attempts…except the next year our schedules collided and we found ourselves alone in the teacher’s lounge at the same time every day and manners dictated that we actually converse. But when we were both tagged as chaperones on an overnight trip, our fellow teachers got involved. “Did you notice what a gentleman he is?” Why yes, I did.

Let’s just say the rest is history. After a whirlwind keep-it-hidden-from-our-students courtship, he popped the question. We invited all of our students to the wedding and the seniors on the football team served as ushers. I left teaching behind once we were expecting our first child and have since done my supporting from the sidelines. But I still remember those semi-private lunches in the teacher’s lounge and even chaperoning the homecoming banquet while hiding the fact we were on a date too.

Of course, you can’t fall in love with someone you don’t spend time with, which is why the workplace is just one of several places couples meet. Proximity is certainly a factor. Not to mention that some types of jobs imply shared values, interests, and perhaps even the same skill sets. Being part of a team or company working toward a common goal creates a sense of unity that can spill over into a friendship and then a potential relationship. And if you happen to be surrounded by matchmaking coworkers (or “customers”), then everyone leaves with a great story to tell.

In my latest novel, Focus On Love, the heroine was previously burned after dating an intern in her father’s business and then again when a backstage romance at the dinner theater fizzled away. By the time Ryan walks into the theater, she’s not sure what to think of the handsome photographer. But once they start working together, this third time might just become her picture-perfect love story.

What about you? Have you ever dated (or married) someone you met at work? Do you know someone else who has? How did it work out?  — Candee

Anna Banks

Annabella Mason of the St Louis Masons just got engaged to the perfect guy—the perfect guy to keep her father’s business going, that is.
